Max is simply pure love, happiness, and a pinch of sugar.

Max visited EPCT after helping himself to a very large helping of chocolate brownies. He was consuming a lot of water and his belly was quite bloated. His concerned family immediately called Pet Poison Helpline on the way to us, and upon arrival, Dr. Heineman and our night team acted fast with a medication to help him safely vomit.

What came up? Chocolate, brownies, candy… and Mom’s secret stash of peppermints! (We’re starting to think Max may have inherited his sweet tooth from his momma. 😉)

Thanks to quick action and a consult with Pet Poison, Max was treated with fluids, anti-nausea meds, and lots of cuddles — and was cleared to go home for monitoring.

⚠️ Chocolate ingestion in pets can range from mild to life-threatening.
Symptoms can include:
Hyperactivity
Rapid heart rate
Panting
Restlessness
High blood pressure

Treatment may include outpatient care or ICU hospitalization depending on the severity.

When in doubt, always call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline right away — fast action makes all the difference! Save their number: (888) 426-4435

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month

Veterinary medicine is a profession built on compassion — yet too often, those who care for others carry their own pain in silence.

The pressures of veterinary life — long hours, emotional fatigue, financial stress, and the weight of life-and-death decisions — can be overwhelming. This month, and every month, we want to remind our colleagues, friends, and team members:
Your mental health matters. Your life matters.

💬 Talk to someone.
🤝 Reach out if you’re struggling.
🧠 Support others when you can.
📞 And if you need help, ask for it without shame.

Check out Prima- she's guiding a sacrococcygeal block — a procedure often used to help relieve pain and discomfort in urinary obstruction cases in cats.

Prima has recently joined the EPCT team - and our staff and clients can't say enough good things about the positivity she brings. With a special passion for anesthesia and local regional blocks, Prima brings both expertise and heart to every patient interaction. She’s especially passionate about patient comfort and training fellow technicians in advanced techniques.

Here’s a quick note from Prima herself:
"I love veterinary medicine, specifically anesthesia and local regional blocks! Patient care and comfort is of the utmost importance for me! I love teaching new skills to fellow technicians and learning new techniques!"

We're so grateful to have Prima as part of the EPCT family!

Nail caps, like Soft Paws, are often used as a humane alternative to declawing and to protect furniture or skin from scratching. While they can be safe when applied and maintained correctly, it’s important to understand the potential risks.

This sweet cat came to us with a painful infection caused by a nail cap that had grown into her paw pad. Unfortunately, it required surgical removal and treatment for the resulting infection.

What can go wrong with nail caps?
⚠️ Overgrown nails can push caps into the pad, causing pain, infection, or injury
⚠️ Caps left on too long can trap debris, bacteria, or grow into tissue
⚠️ Improperly sized or applied caps can cause discomfort or interfere with walking

If you choose to use nail caps, follow these tips:
✔️ Trim your cat’s nails before applying caps
✔️ Regularly check paws for signs of irritation, swelling, or discomfort
✔️ Replace caps every 4–6 weeks—never let them grow out
✔️ Use proper sizing and avoid applying caps too far down the nail
✔️ Monitor behavior closely—excessive licking or limping may be a red flag

We know pet parents always want the best for their cats. If you're unsure about using nail caps or notice any problems, talk to your veterinarian first. Preventive care and regular paw checks can go a long way in keeping your feline family member safe and comfortable.

Frank, a 4 year-old Shar Pei mix was rushed to us after he suddenly began retching, lost control of his bowels, and collapsed at home. Our team quickly discovered he was in anaphylactic shock — a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Using an ultrasound, the team spotted a gallbladder wall edema, commonly referred to as a "gallbladder halo," a telltale sign of anaphylaxis. Bloodwork confirmed the crisis—abnormal clotting times and elevated liver enzymes pointed to anaphylactic shock. The strange part? Frank had not even been outside yet that morning.

Fast diagnostics led to faster treatment including epinephrine, fluids, and a plasma transfusion, and Frank slowly stabilized. Unfortunately for Frank, he had to cope with this through a thunderstorm which our staff realized is not his favorite weather!

Thanks to the dedication of our doctors and technicians, even his very own Thunder Buddy Smo, Frank improved enough to go home that very night.

⚠️Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.⚠️
It can happen suddenly — sometimes without an obvious trigger.
It must be treated as an emergency.

Two striking, tiny kittens were found huddled under a car by one of our longtime team members — trying to escape the brutal Texas sun. Now called Mavis & Martha, they're on their feet and found their forever home.

Moments like this remind us: what we do isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. Our team’s passion for animals doesn’t stop at the hospital doors — it’s part of who we are, every day, everywhere.

A reminder to everyone: Please be mindful of abandoned kittens under cars, in bushes, or near roadsides — especially during the hot summer months. If you come across kittens in need, resources like AAR - Abandoned Animal Rescue can help.
