🥵 A parked car can become dangerous faster than you think.

Even on a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can climb rapidly, putting pets at serious risk for heatstroke in just minutes.

If you're running errands this summer, the safest place for your pet is at home in the air conditioning.

Signs of heatstroke can include:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling
- Weakness or collapse
- Vomiting
- Bright red gums

If you suspect your pet may be overheating, seek veterinary care immediately. Heatstroke is a medical emergency.

Our team had a great time at Horseman's Market Day on August 15th at the Brazos County Expo! 🐴

Hosted by the Brazos Valley Driving and Riding Club, this annual event brings together animal lovers from across the region for a full day of shopping, connecting, and fun.

We loved meeting so many famillies from Magnolia and the surrounding communities, sharing more about our team at EPCT. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello!

My dog ate something they shouldn't have... now what?

Pets are curious, and sometimes that curiosity leads them to things they should never eat.

If your dog gets into something unexpected, try to:
🐾 Remove access to the item if it is safe to do so
🐾 Keep the packaging or ingredient list if available
🐾 Note what was eaten and how much
🐾 Contact ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435
🐾 Contact your primary veterinarian or our team for guidance

Some toxins and foreign objects can cause serious problems, even if your pet seems fine at first.

When in doubt, it's always better to ask.

When Kitten Hitchcock (orange kitten pictured) arrived at EPCT, she was weak, stumbling, and in critical condition. During her exam with Dr. Garcia, our team discovered a severe flea infestation and dangerously pale gums. Bloodwork confirmed life-threatening flea anemia, and she needed an emergency blood transfusion to have a chance at survival.

Dr. Southerland, who took over her care after the blood transfusion, shared this sweet photo of Kitten after her four-hour transfusion. Freshly bathed and enjoying some snuggles!

The second sweetie pictured in this post (fluffy black cat) is the amazing hero of this story, Winifred James! Winifred James is an EPCT employee pet who donated blood and helped save Kitten Hitchcock's life. We're so grateful for donor cats like Winifred James who make second chances possible.

One of the simplest ways to monitor your pet's health is by knowing what is normal for them.

A healthy dog or cat at rest typically breathes 15 to 30 times per minute. Counting your pet's breaths while they are sleeping or relaxing can help you spot changes early.

Breathing problems can become serious quickly. Knowing your pet's normal breathing rate can help you recognize when something is not right.

Today is , and we're sharing a few important signs that could indicate your cat needs emergency care. 🐈‍⬛

Cats are incredibly good at hiding when something is wrong, which is why even subtle changes in their behavior can be significant. If your cat is suddenly hiding more than usual, refusing to eat, sleeping much more than normal, or just doesn't seem like themselves, it's worth paying attention.

Check out the graphic below for some common signs to watch for. You know your cat better than anyone, so if something feels off, trust your instincts. Early action can make all the difference.

Our team had a great time participating in Fish Creek Animal Hospital's Vet for a Day event this past weekend!

It was a wonderful opportunity to give families a behind-the-scenes look at life inside a veterinary hospital while sharing more about emergency veterinary medicine. We loved meeting everyone, answering questions, and talking about the many ways veterinary teams care for pets.

A big thank you to Fish Creek Animal Hospital for inviting us to be part of such a fun and meaningful event. We always enjoy connecting with our community and helping pet owners learn more about veterinary medicine!

Earlier this week, our team had the opportunity to visit Stuebner Airline Veterinary Hospital for a Lunch & Learn focused on Stress-Free Handling of Cats! 🐱

Our team member, Cheryl Coartney, RVT (CA, CO), VTS (ECC), shared practical techniques to help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress for feline patients during veterinary visits. From low-stress handling tips to creating a calmer experience for cats, it was a great discussion with a team that's dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care.

Thank you to everyone at Stuebner Airline Veterinary Hospital for welcoming us! We always enjoy connecting with our veterinary community and sharing ideas that help make veterinary visits less stressful for pets, their families, and the teams who care for them.

When is limping an emergency?

Not every limp is minor, and in some cases, it can signal a serious injury that needs immediate veterinary care.

Limping should be treated as an emergency if you notice:
🚨 Sudden inability to bear weight on a limb
🚨 Obvious swelling, deformity, or an awkward angle to the leg
🚨 Crying out, extreme pain, or aggression when the area is touched
🚨 Suspected trauma (fall, hit by car, or rough play injury)
🚨 A limb that feels hot, cold, or looks significantly different than the others
🚨 No improvement or worsening over a short period of time

If your pet won't put weight on a leg or seems to be in significant pain, it's safest to have them evaluated right away. Early treatment can make a big difference in recovery.
