Callie meet Cow.
Socializing your puppy is possible even if they aren’t fully vaccinated. Puppies under 16 weeks of age are in a critical socialization period. That means that their brain is in a developmental period where puppies only need one exposure for their brain to decide if something is good, neutral, or bad. You can not get this time back, so don’t wait to properly socialize your puppy. Some tips to get you started:
-Carry your puppy or put them in a crate that you can hold for walks around the neighborhood, parks, etc. If you go to a dog friendly store, put the crate in a cart.
-Go for car rides. Take your puppy with you through the drive through or other short trips.
-Search YouTube for sound effects and play loud sounds like fireworks, thunder, large machinery, blenders, etc. You can do this right at home!
-Look for something new around your house to introduce to your puppy. It can be pots and pans, a wobbly surface like a wobble board, boxes, recycling, kids toys, etc.
-Last but certainly not least… If your puppy won’t eat treats, they are to stressed out. Back off a bit. Increase distance. Maybe you don’t get to go into the store because the parking lot is enough. That’s okay! Don’t rush your puppy and force them into situations that terrify them. If you show them they are safe be providing them safety, often times they will trust you more and will consider doing hard things because they have learned you will allow them to stop if they need.
So grab your treat pouch and get your puppy out into this crazy world!
