Strawberries are being planted on this beautiful overcast morning! Gardening class started the planting off like pros! Rest of the planting will happen here shortly followed by the rest of the irrigation line being installed. Lastly, we’ll follow this up with laying down a w**d barrier that sandwiches the strawberry plants. It’s a new method I haven’t tried before. After the super wet spring of 2024 and berries sitting in the water that pooled in the beds, I’m trying this method out, especially since 2025 spring was even more wet than the previous! Also, hoping this will make it easier to harvest since the walkways are significantly wider than previous years.

Hope

Audrey Hepburn once said “To plant a seed is to believe in tomorrow.” When I first heard this I very flippantly thought, “oh yeah, of course!” And oh, that’s so very deep, which it is on so many levels… But after the growing season I’ve been blessed to experience this year, I truly feel the meaning at its simplest meaning. To plant a seed means that we’re NOT giving up, that even though we may have failed, we’re NOT failures (just perpetually learning 😆), and that IF we want to harvest a crop a seed MUST be planted.

ALRIGHT… I’m done being all philosophical and will get back to work. Remember if you want to have a fall/winter garden, it’s NOT too late, so get on growing and if you’re not sure where to start, has a great growers library online that y’all can access for tips and tricks for growing year-round. Happy growing!

It’s still time for planting. This year has come with so many challenges, but the only thing left to do is plow forward.

Pic 1 - These used to be our onion beds. They were just seeded yesterday with arugula, radishes, lettuce mix, a mixture of baby cut greens, beets, carrots and sunflowers. Some of these crops will be ready in a month. Others closer to two months.

Pic 2 - some sort of critter is nuzzling into the beds looking for something. If you know what, let me know in the comments!

Pic 3 - Progress on the beds we seeded two Wednesdays ago. Same crops as in pic 1, but no mix of baby cut greens and lots of beans!

There’s always lessons to be learned while growing plants. Patience seems to be the lesson I haven’t learned yet as it’s constantly being challenged. Who else is struggling with the w**d and deer pressures this year (even in your home gardens)?! It’s gonna be alright because the alternative just isn’t acceptable, right?! Have a good day! ❤️🙌

Out with the old fence and in with the new…

The deer pressure has been real this year! We’ve lost so many crops this year (and last). I kept thinking we had fixed the gaps, but, noooo the deer found all of our weak spots. So we ordered new fencing and put in more T-Posts. This was an investment that we will have to replace within another 3-5 years. I am hoping the replacement will be a permanent fence so it’ll be stronger and taller to ensure the deer stay out. If you want to help fund our future permanent deer fence, please click the link in our bio. It’s long term fundraising for this project that will cost $40-50K. Yikes!

The second shot was us using the truck as our ladder. Work smarter, not harder. This is when a small truck is better than a big truck.

Rooted in God, Growing for Good

The Madison Farm is tucked away in Neelys Bend of Madison, just north of Nashville. The Madison Farm is a reboot of the original that was founded in 1904 on 440 acres that was Madison College, and is today Madison Academy.

Shannon and Jenni are the Farm Managers of The Madison Farm; in collaboration with two students, Kendra and Patrick, are spearheading this agriculture revolution for our schools and community.

The purpose of The Madison Farm is to revolutionize holistic learning and service through year-round biointensive farming. We plan to do this by empowering people to live a life of intention by integrating education with agriculture. It is our goal to develop practical skills in students, while enhancing the Madison area by providing opportunities for healthy-living education, community outreach, and sustainable initiatives. We are Rooted in God and Growing for Good.
