It’s National Senior Health & Fitness Day – for Pets Too!🐾

Today we’re celebrating healthy aging for seniors, and that includes our senior pets! Just like people, pets benefit from regular physical and mental activity as they age. While many pets can slow down a bit as they age, keeping their bodies and minds engaged is critical to ensuring they live a long and happy life.

Try gentle walks, swimming, or low-impact games with your older dog, or use puzzle games and feeders to keep their minds sharp. 🧩 And if your pet seems stiff or uncomfortable, talk to your veterinarian about ways to manage pain and keep them moving.

Let’s keep our golden oldies thriving! 💛 Share a photo of your sweet senior with us in the comments!

April is Heartworm Awareness Month! ❤️🦟
Did you know that heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, cats, and ferrets - and it’s transmitted by a single mosquito bite? Despite common myths, heartworm isn’t just a “Southern problem.” It’s present here in Connecticut and the surrounding states, too.

Here are the facts you need to know:
✔️ Any pet - even indoor-only - can get heartworm
✔️ It won’t go away on its own and requires treatment by a vet
✔️ Monthly preventatives are the easiest way to protect your pet

Treating heartworm can be tough and expensive, but prevention is simple and safe. Talk to your vet about the right preventative for your pet and stay up to date on regular testing. Let’s work together to keep your furry family members safe and heartworm-free! 🐾💊

🐶🔍 April 23rd is Lost Dog Awareness Day!

It’s a day to raise awareness about lost pets and the steps we can take to keep our furry friends safe and secure. According to the American Humane Society, up to 30% of pets will go missing at some point in their lifetime - but with a few simple precautions, you can greatly increase the chances of a happy reunion.

✅ Make sure your pet is microchipped and that your contact info is up to date (we can help check it for you!)
✅ Keep a collar with current ID tags on your pet (breakaway collars for cats are safest)
✅ Supervise outdoor time, especially without a fenced yard
✅ Practice recall and always reward your pet for coming when called

Pets with ID and microchips are far more likely to find their way home. And if you ever find a lost pet, call your local Animal Control and spread the word - it could make all the difference 💙

As you get ready to enjoy your Easter festivities this Sunday, don’t forget to keep your furry friends safe from some common holiday hazards! 🐾

⚠️ Easter Lilies: Beautiful but highly toxic to cats and dogs. All parts of the plant can cause serious kidney damage, so either keep them out of your home or well out of reach.
⚠️ Plastic Easter Grass: Looks fun and festive, but can cause blockages if swallowed. Opt for paper grass instead!
⚠️ Chocolate & Candy: Chocolate is toxic to pets, especially dark or baking chocolate. And be extra cautious with candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is deadly to pets even in small amounts.
⚠️ Easter Dinner: Keep ham bones and fatty trimmings away from pets. These can lead to GI upset, pancreatitis, or choking hazards and blockages.

Let’s keep the emergency room off your Easter agenda - know the risks, keep an eye on your pets, and enjoy a safe, happy holiday! 💐🐶🐱

🐰🐣 Thinking About a Live Easter Pet? Read This First!

When we think of Easter, cute images of bunnies, chicks, and ducklings come to mind - but before you bring one home, remember: real animals aren’t seasonal gifts!

Rabbits and birds can make wonderful companions, but they require research, time, and proper care - just like any other pet. Sadly, many animals purchased on impulse for Easter are later abandoned once the holiday ends, and these pets cannot survive in the wild. If you’re not ready for a multi-year commitment, stick to chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks instead! 🍫💛

🐇Rabbits can live over 10 years, needs a specialized diet, regular vet visits, spaying/neutering, and lots of enrichment, space to exercise, and social interaction.
🐥 Chickens and ducks grow quickly and need secure outdoor housing, proper nutrition, and the care of an avian-savvy veterinarian.

If you’re considering adding a rabbit or bird to your family, make sure you’ve got everything in place to provide a great, forever home!

April is Stress Awareness Month - for You and Your Pets! 🐾😌

Just like people, our pets can experience stress and anxiety, which can lead to both health and behavioral issues. Uneasy dogs may “stress eat” furniture or other objects or get extra territorial, while cats might urinate outside the litterbox or over-groom when they're feeling overwhelmed. Birds, rabbits, and other exotic pets are also very susceptible to stress, and these little guys are much more fragile.

Stress can come from a variety of sources, and every pet processes the world a little differently. Helping your pet feel safe and calm can take some time and patience, but it’s well worth it! 🐶🐱💙 Here are a few tips to reduce stress:
✔️ Stick to a consistent daily routine
✔️ Provide regular physical and mental stimulation
✔️ Keep their environment clean and secure
✔️ Ask your vet about calming tools or anti-anxiety medications if needed

If your pet is showing signs of stress, let’s talk. Together, we can find a solution that brings them comfort and improves quality of life, for both of you!
