As grain free diets have become more fashionable, we have seen an alarming increase in the number of dogs develop significant heart heart disease (Dilated CardioMyopathy/ DCM). There is mounting evidence that it may be secondary to being fed a grain free diet, especially those containing peas and lentils. As of yet, the mechanism has not been identified, however, given the data, it is prudent to advise against feeding grain free diets, especially those that contain peas and lentils.
This is even more important if you have a breed predisposed to this type of heart disease: Golden Retriever, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane and Cocker Spaniels.
Signs of DCM do NOT occur until the heart can no longer pump effectively. These signs include: (lethargy, weakness, weight loss, collapse, coughing, and difficulty breathing). If you notice any of these signs in you dog, they should be evaluated by a veterinarian ASAP.
