OccuPaws Guide Dog Association

OccuPaws Guide Dog Association This is the official site for OccuPaws Guide Dog Association. All of our dogs are trained on an individual basis and are worked extensively on a daily basis.

OccuPaws is a nonprofit dedicated to providing fully trained guide dogs at no cost to the visually impaired adults across Wisconsin, northern Illinois, eastern Minnesota, and parts of Iowa. Our Program

OccuPaws, an International Guide Dog Federation accredited school, offers a unique training experience to the clients we serve. All of our placement training sessions are conducted in the comfort o

f the client's home environment. This means that a blind individual does not have to leave their home, their job and their family to get the training required to safely and effectively use one of the most incredible mobility tools available - a guide dog. In some cases, acquiring a guide dog may affect the lives of other family members, and depending on the client and the individual situation, the family may also partake in some of the guide dog training experience. Once an OccuPaws' puppy has earned his or her CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certification, passes our intensive health screenings and graduates from the Community Puppy Program, they start the three to four month long phase of Formal Harness Training. During the Formal Harness Training, the aspiring guide dogs reside in the homes of our Guide Dog Mobility Instructors or volunteer homes. While the dogs are learning guide dog mechanics, they are taught to avoid obstacles, indicate changes in elevation, respect traffic and much, much more. OccuPaws has also integrated "targeting" as a major part of the formal harness training. Our dogs are taught to find many objects for their blind partners such as escalators, elevators, stairs, empty chairs, counters, empty stalls in public restrooms, find inside and find their way out of buildings and so much more. Once the Instructors and Apprentice Trainers have completed the training necessary for a dog to become a safe and efficient working guide, the dogs are then proofed and polished by our visually impaired apprentice Instructor. Yes, all of the OccuPaws' Guide Dogs live and work with an actual blind person before they are matched with their permanent partners. It is the art of the match when it comes to pairing the perfect working team. Our application process and mobility screening helps us match the right guide dog with the right person. We take into consideration: lifestyle, activity level, walking speed and personality to name a few. Once we match the right dog with the right person, the placement training can take place. Our "in community" placement program is typically a two to three week training period. The length of the client's training is defined by the individual's needs, ability and experience. Our clients will learn how to safely use their guide dogs in many settings such as rural, residential, city and major metropolitan locations. All aspects of guide dog mechanics, philosophy, public transportation, problem solving and service dog access and etiquette will be covered during placement training. Technical support and follow up for the working life of each OccuPaws' team is available and at the ready when requested. We take great pride in our small size and our ability to effectively support our guide dog users. If you would like to apply for an OccuPaws' Guide Dog, please complete and submit our Student Application. If you have any questions regarding the Formal Harness Training program, please contact us! We are happy to help!

🐾 Guide Dog in Training Spotlight — Meet Jasper 🐾

Say hello to Jasper, our striking black male Labrador Retriever, born on April 27, 2025, from the OccuPaws Roxie x Murray pairing. Jasper is currently in the Obedience and Socialization stage of his training, where his confident, curious personality is already shining through.

Wearing the green collar of the group, Jasper brings an energetic mix of boldness and curiosity to everything he does. He approaches the world with enthusiasm — sniffing out new textures, exploring grass and dirt like they are brand-new discoveries, and eagerly taking in all the sights and sounds around him. His bright, spirited nature makes training both rewarding and entertaining.

Jasper has been raised by a wonderful team of volunteers: Barb of Cross Plains, Kathy and Dan of Sun Prairie, Kassel and Taylor of Poynette, and Angie and Nate of Madison. Thanks to his charming personality and this supportive village, Jasper is off to an excellent start on his exciting path toward becoming a future guide dog.

🎄 Guide Dog Nina & Rill’s Christmas Spree!🎄

Guide dog Nina and her handler Rill enjoyed a festive Christmas outing together — practicing safe navigation, exploring holiday sights, and sharing a little joy along the way. This beautiful team, paired last year, continues to grow stronger with every step, proving that independence can shine bright… even brighter than the Christmas lights!

Their Christmas shopping became even more special when they were joined by volunteer puppy raiser Sara and GDiT Hulu. What makes this outing even sweeter is seeing the bond come full circle: Nina’s former puppy raiser still gets to share moments with her — and with Rill — reminding us that the connection you build with a puppy you once raised doesn’t have to end. It simply grows, deepens, and becomes something even more meaningful.

🛒🐾 Grocery Store Adventures with Jingle & Jersey! 🐾🛒

When you’re a hardworking guide dog in training, even a trip to the grocery store becomes a lesson — especially when the meat counter is involved.

Siblings Jingle and Jersey practiced their down-stays right in front of the most tempting section of the entire store… and let’s just say the steaks were high.

But these two champs held their positions like pros — no sneaking, no sniffing, not even a single strategic scoot forward. (We’re impressed. The chicken looked good.)

Huge thanks to volunteer puppy raisers Julie and Nicole for taking these two on their deliciously challenging field trip and turning temptation into training success!

Great job, Jingle and Jersey — you’re both a cut above the rest!

🐾 Guide Dog in Training Spotlight — Meet Flora 🐾

Say hello to Flora, our adorable female Labrador Retriever from our very first litter of 2025! Born on January 2, she comes from OccuPaws’ own Rose x Murray pairing — and as the only girl in the litter, she’s already standing out. It’s no surprise she’s been stealing hearts from the start!

Flora is currently working on her obedience skills through our partners at PawsForward in New Lisbon. There, she’s gaining confidence, learning structure, and building the essential foundation she’ll need as she continues her journey toward becoming a guide dog.

She has been raised with the care and dedication of Barb of Cross Plains, Tracey of Madison, Julie of Fitchburg, and the PawsForward team. Each one has played an important role in helping Flora grow into the sweet, affectionate, and attentive pup she is today.

We can’t wait to follow Flora’s progress as she learns, grows, and takes each step closer to becoming a life-changing guide dog.

🎂🐾 Happy 1st Birthday to the E-Litter Duo — Elgin & Ember! 🐾🎂

It’s a double celebration week for these two rising stars! Elgin celebrated his birthday yesterday, and Ember’s big day is tomorrow — which means the E-litter siblings are officially ONE year old!

Both pups recently passed their evaluations and are moving into harness training, showing us just how bright their futures are.

And where are they celebrating their first birthdays? Inside the PawsForward program — proving that even a birthday behind the walls can be something uniquely special when you’re surrounded by people cheering you on.

Happy Birthday, you wonderful siblings!

🐾 Small, Medium, Large… and Absolutely Perfect! 🐾

Career-changed Tula, along with GDiT Maddie and Quintin, had a full-on slumber party at our volunteer puppy raiser Kassel’s house — and yes, they lined up exactly like a Goldilocks trio for this photo.

These three sat in perfect chronological order:
🐶 Large Model: Tula, the wise and beautiful big sis
🐶 Medium Model: Maddie, the bright middle pup
🐶 Small Model: Quintin, the baby bean

Maddie and Quintin had a short transitional stay with Kassel before rotating to their next puppy raisers… so naturally, they commemorated it with the most professional group photo any dog trio has ever taken. Aren’t they the cutest three musketeers?

🐾 Guide Dog in Training Spotlight – Maddie! 🐾

Say hello to Maddie, a black female Labrador Retriever bred by ClearCreek Labradors of IL and born on June 13, 2025. Maddie has just moved up to the Obedience and Socialization stage and is now being lovingly raised by Kassel and Taylor of Poynette. She was previously raised by Beth and her family in Madison.

The Puppy Committee had quite the challenge coming up with two “M” names for this litter, so Maddie’s first puppy raisers were given the honor of choosing her name—and it fits her perfectly.

Maddie is already showing herself to be a bright and curious learner. She approaches new experiences with confidence and picks up new skills quickly, giving us a glimpse of her promising future as a guide dog.

Welcome to the guide-dog-in-training world, Maddie. We cannot wait to watch you learn, grow, and make a difference one day.
