Yesterday was National Guide Dog Day and while we may be a little late, the impact of these incredible dogs is something we celebrate every single day at Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center!!

At Gallant Hearts our mission is to breed, raise, train and place highly skilled guide dogs for individuals who are blind completely free of charge.

These dogs do so much more than guide, they provide: Independence, confidence, safety and a renewed sense of freedom

From the very beginning as puppies, to months of training, to finally being matched with their person. Each guide dog represents a life-changing journey made possible through volunteers, puppy raisers and supporters like you.

Want to be part of something truly meaningful?
We are always in need of puppy raisers(you can be located anywhere in the US to be a puppy raiser), volunteers and community support to continue changing lives.

Because every step forward begins with a Gallant Heart.

We are incredibly blessed with an abundance of puppies ready (or soon to be ready) for our puppy raiser program.

By the end of July, we will have 9 puppies ready to be placed with puppy raisers. Puppy raisers can be located ANYWHERE in the US.

Right now and over the next few months, we have:
• A donated white Standard Poodle
• Two Doberman puppies
• Two Shepherd puppies (ready in about a month)
• Another Doberman litter (ready late July)
• A Shepherd litter (ready mid–late July)

This is an amazing opportunity but we cannot do it alone.

Raisers keep their puppy until about 18 months old, helping shape them into future service dogs before they return to Gallant Hearts for advanced training and evaluation.

Our need is urgent.

We have more applicants than ever before. People waiting on these incredible dogs and the reputation of our training program continues to grow.

If you’ve ever considered raising a puppy… now is the time.

If you can’t raise, please share this post or help us spread the word.

With heavy hearts, we share that Becky lost her beloved guide dog, Mae on February 24, 2026.

Mae was born on July 20, 2013 and came to Gallant Hearts in early October of that year. From the very beginning she showed strength and resilience. Because of frequent urinary tract infections, she remained with our Executive Director, Becky Floyd, through months of treatment until the issue was surgically corrected when Mae was 8 months old. She continued to live with Becky until July of 2015, when she left for guide dog training.

In October of 2015, Becky’s guide dog, Lucy, was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and fusing of her vertebrae and had to retire. When Mae completed her training, Becky chose to bring her home as her new guide dog. They trained together that November, and Mae spent almost her entire life faithfully by her side.

For the past eleven years, Mae has been the face of so much of Gallant Hearts’ public relations work. She was beautifully behaved, gentle and trustworthy around other dogs and animals and a perfect ambassador. Not only for Gallant Hearts but for the Doberman breed. She changed hearts and minds everywhere she went.

Mae was more than a guide dog. She was a partner, a steady presence, and a deeply loved member of the Gallant Hearts family. Her legacy will live on in every life she touched and every person who saw the incredible potential of a working Doberman because of her.

Run free, Marvelous Mae. You did your job so very well.
