Indoor cats can’t get fleas, right? Think again. Fleas can hitchhike a ride on any warm body. Cats who are around other animals, or even people with animals at home, are at risk for exposure.

An up to date annual exam is required to dispense prevention. Schedule a visit with us or give us a call for advice on how to protect your four-legged friend year-round.

Even though the day has passed - it is still important to note! August 15th is known as Check the Chip Day! 🐾

The purpose of this day is to remind pet owners to microchip their pets, and if already microchipped, to make sure the registration information is up to date! A microchip greatly increases the chance of a lost or stolen pet being reunited with their families - but the key part is the registration information being up to date!

We offer microchipping here at the office through Home Again! Typically it is done at the same time as a sedated procedure (Spay, neuter, dental, etc) due to the size of the needle - but it can be scheduled as an appointment with one of our doctors, or with a technician (as long as your pet is up to date on an annual exam!)

Once the microchip is administered, we provide registration/enrollment paperwork for you to fill out - an email will be sent to you to continue setting up an account for your pet through Home Again and that is where information can be updated as time goes on to ensure that your pet is covered if they got lost! A microchip can be scanned at almost any veterinary office or emergency room.

Attached is a video from the American Veterinary Medical Association on the importance of microchipping. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns!

Our next featured Staff Pet Sunday is Waffles!

Waffles is the spoiled dog of our Practice Manager, Nicole. Waffles is just over a year old and loves to play, sleep, snuggle, tries to be sneaky and thinks she is a small lap dog. She always gets in trouble in her stealth mode. Waffles loves snuggling with our kitty Ellis and sitting on her Labrador brother, Matt (Mattchew) when he's laying on his bed. She is very protective at home but she's just a lovable little fluff ball.

We love you, Waffles! 🧇💛

🦟 Mosquitoes aren’t just a nuisance – they can also be carriers of heartworm disease. Protect your pet by prioritizing year-round prevention.

Shop on our online pharmacy (a written prescription is not required for this) https://themadisonvet.myvetstoreonline.pharmacy/shoptoday - reach out to us on the Otto app, or by calling the office for any questions or to refill your pet's heartworm prevention to keep your furry friend safe from harm. 🐾❤️

An annual exam and heartworm test, along with consistent dosing is required to dispense heartworm prevention! (Friendly reminder - this is more geared towards dogs. It's rare for cats to contract heartworm disease, and if they do, unfortunately there isn't treatment because of how quickly it progresses in cats. However - one of our flea and tick products for cats - Bravecto Plus - does prevent heartworm)

August is also noted for National Immunization Awareness Month - not only for humans, but for our pets as well!

Vaccinations play an important role in our pet's health. When given vaccines, it stimulates an immune response in their body which then enables their bodies to fight off certain diseases more effectively. Vaccinations contain harmless forms of the agent that causes the disease, known as antigens, and they prepare the immune system to recognize/build immunity.

Vaccines are separated into core and non-core vaccines. Non-core vaccines are moreso lifestyle dependent, but still strongly recommended depending on lifestyle, environment, and risk factors. **Every pet is unique, and their vaccination needs may differ based on factors like age, lifestyle, location, and overall health.**

- Core vaccines for dogs are distemper (DAPP), rabies, and leptospirosis. For cats, distemper (FVRCP), and rabies.
- Non-core vaccines (but still highly recommended) for dogs include: Lyme disease, Bordetella, and Canine Influenza.
- Non core vaccines for cats include Feline Leukemia.

Below are resources from the American Animal Hospital Association that go into more detail on vaccines, as well as a vaccine lifestyle calculator that can help you determine which vaccines is best for your pet! As always, please reach out to our office with any questions/concerns or for more information on vaccines for your pet. We're happy to help!
