Erna Valdivia has made history as the first African American teenage girl to compete in the prestigious Tevis Cup, a grueling one-day, 100-mile endurance race through the Sierra Nevada, riding a horse that her mother saved from dire circumstances.

Erna, 17, expressed her astonishment with a chuckle and a shake of her head. "It's both physically and emotionally demanding, but she is exceptional," Valdivia remarked, gently stroking "Love Story," the mare rescued by her mother, who operates the Love This Horse Equine Rescue in Mojave.

The white mare was destined for slaughter before her rescue. Initially timid and difficult to approach, she formed a remarkable bond with Erna, who eventually took to riding her.

A huge thanks to my newly discovered veterinary service… Scoot never knew what happened during his brain transfer and he is already returning to the sweet c**t he was before he thought about being a stallion! He’s going to be a great gelding!
