Habitat 4 Hounds is a volunteer run, foster home based animal rescue. We are a GA state licensed, certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Macon, GA. Instead, we operate primarily through our foster homes and online databases. The majority of our rescues come from animal control facilities, where overcrowding leads to the euthanasia of millions of healthy, friendly pets every year. We

are committed to providing the animals that come into our rescue with love, structure and stability while they wait for their forever homes. We never euthanize animals due to space or time constraints. We also serve our community and adopters by educating and encouraging responsible pet ownership, with an emphasis on the need for spaying and neutering.

We have reached the season in rescue where a lot of our senior animals are aging out.

In less than two years, we have euthanized several of our long term residents here at H4H, and today, we will say goodbye to two more.

Last week was a rough week with the loss of Belle.
Over the weekend, I lost a (human) friend unexpectedly.

At 2pm, we will put our last two sanctuary ferrets to rest.

The emotional and mental toll is overwhelming right now, so to continuously throw in the need for donations in every post seems to take away from the immense pain felt, but that is the reality of rescue.

We still owe $130 for Belle’s euthanasia.
Today, we will add an additional $150 to that.

We’d be grateful for a donation, no matter how small. It all helps offset the cost of palliative care and end of life decisions.

We still have a balance at the vet for Belle’s euthanasia, and in typical sanctuary fashion, we have two senior ferrets that will probably meet her at the rainbow bridge this week. 😭

Rescue certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. 😞

Please help us lay them to rest. ❤️‍🩹

I had intentions of giving an update yesterday evening, but I was so mentally and emotionally spent, I did not have the energy.

It was incredibly difficult to attend Belle’s euthanasia and then go straight into work to deal with the public for the day. By the time I finally got off, I was exhausted, heartbroken, fighting a raging headache, and realized I hadn’t eaten all day.

Coming home meant facing it all over again.
Just in a different way.

You would think with a house full of dogs, you wouldn’t notice one less bark, but it is quite the opposite.

It will never feel natural to me to end a life, even when it means ending suffering.

I’m grateful Belle and I got to share some steak and a few quiet moments before she drifted off to sleep. A far kinder passing than waiting until an emergent situation.

In rescue, we often celebrate the victories, the happy endings, the second chances, the lives saved. What people don’t always see is that sometimes victory is followed by deep sadness, and somehow, both are rooted in love.

We’ve shared openly here about our financial struggles while trying to recover from personal hardships of our own. Although we haven’t yet been able to rebuild enough of a safety net to actively rescue the way we once did, we continue pouring every bit of our personal time, energy, and money into caring for our sanctuary animals.

We are still trying to raise the remaining funds for Belle’s euthanasia and cremation costs through Petamorphosis, Nature's Goodbye in Macon. So far, we are only about one-third of the way there.

For those unfamiliar with Petamorphosis, they provide pet aquamation (also called water cremation or alkaline hydrolysis) - an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional flame cremation. Instead of fire, the process uses water and gentle alkalinity to return a pet to ashes in a way that is softer on the environment while still allowing families to bring their beloved pets home.

If you are local to Middle Georgia, please consider checking out Petamorphosis and the compassionate work they are doing for pet families in Macon. Their goal is to provide a more peaceful and environmentally conscious goodbye for the animals we love so deeply.

If you are able to donate toward Belle’s end of life care, we’d be so grateful.

EDIT: Her appointment is set for 915. 😔

It’s time.

I typed out a post last night to share today, thinking we’d have a little more time, but when I checked on her at 5am this morning, I could tell… it’s time.

I’ll be calling the vet as soon as they open this morning to see if they can fit her in before I go into work. 😭

One of the hardest parts of animal rescue is knowing when it’s time to let them go. Our sweet senior girl’s quality of life has been declining, and while making the decision is gut-wrenching, I know it’s the kindest thing I can do for her.

I feel guilty. Guilty for making the decision. Guilty for wondering if it’s too soon. Guilty for fearing it might be too late. Guilty for having to ask for help to cover the cost of a peaceful euthanasia and aftercare.

But she deserves dignity at the end of her journey just as much as she deserved love throughout it.

This never gets easier. 😭

While the world watched the Met Gala last night, where celebrities spend tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, on outfits designed to outdo one another in extravagance, it’s hard not to think about how far even a tiny fraction of that money could go somewhere else.

One designer gown could feed rescue dogs for months.
One piece of jewelry could provide medical care for animals in need.
One afterparty budget could help starving children, struggling families, or underserved communities trying simply to survive.

Instead, every year we celebrate who can look the most outrageous, the most shocking, the most “fashion forward,” while small rescues like ours are quietly wondering how we’re going to buy enough dog food to get through the week.

Today, we headed to Sam’s Club to purchase food for the dogs here at the rescue - out of our own pockets because the animals still need to eat no matter what the economy looks like.

We know so many people are struggling right now, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking to think about what’s coming for those who already have very little left to give.

We never want anyone to feel pressured.
Times are hard for almost everyone.
But if you happen to have a few dollars to spare… even loose change from your couch cushions… it would make a real difference here.

Every bag of food matters.
Every donation matters.
Every person who cares matters.

And unlike a red carpet outfit worn once for attention, your kindness actually changes lives.

If you’d like to help support the dogs at the rescue, we would be deeply grateful. ❤️

Please continue to share.

I’m sure many of us have gotten to a place in our finances where we have said “something has got to give!”

Well, we are there.

I have no idea how we are going to continue on.

We just emptied our last bag of dog food.
We are out of treats.
We are down to our last package of potty pads.

If we have a vet emergency, it is going to be a nightmare.

What does one do when they have a houseful of senior dogs that no one else wants, but cannot consistently bring in enough donations to take care of them?

I wish I could tell you all that I am rich, but I am not.

PLEASE share, share, share!
We are desperate! 😩😭

While adoptions are important, I found out long ago that adoptions don’t always happen. I’d love for all of our rescues to find their perfect match and live happily ever after, but my desire to save the less adoptable, often means, they stay here forever.

I had a conversation with someone recently about all of our misfits and how I’ve become more of a sanctuary than an adoption organization. It’s bittersweet, really. You always hope someone will come along and want the one that no one else asks about, but it rarely happens.

The downside is the lack of consistent financial support. People want to see big numbers, animals moving, exciting stories about finding their forever family. I totally understand. All of that is great, but sometimes, forever means staying here.

Sometimes, another move is too much. Sometimes, the medical needs can’t be resolved. Sometimes, they need a place to retire. Sometimes, they’re hospice fosters.

Please consider donating to our sanctuary animals. The mistreated, the worn, the sick, the difficult, the displaced. They’ve found safety, peace and love here. They may not mean much to most, but they mean a lot to us.

I fear only those that understand what it’s like to go through the senior years with a companion animal can truly grasp the position that we have been in repeatedly over the last few years.

All of the dogs here at H4H are 8+ years old. Some medically fragile, some with behavior issues that would certainly digress if we moved them, and those who are reaching the end of their life that we are trying to keep comfortable until it is time to send them to the rainbow bridge.

We have had Belle in and out of the vet several times over the past month or so. Every time we take her, it cost us upwards of $200. Sadly, this is a necessity that has to be paid for, so it has eaten away at the surgery fund we had accumulated for Bowie.

While Bowie’s surgery is needed, he is currently comfortable, so utilizing those funds has not necessarily caused him any anguish, however, he is on bedrest more often than not, and he takes two pain meds every day.

When I tell you, we should buy stock in Pill Pockets, I am seriously considering it.

With donations barely coming in, we are officially in 🆘CRISIS MODE🆘. We fear an emergency we can’t cover.

PLEASE consider donating. We just recently spent quite a bit of money on medications, food and treats. This takes away from funds we need to keep on-hand for vet visits.

You can scan the QR code below for wish lists and other donation information.

Thank you for riding the emotional roller coaster with us! We know it isn’t easy. 💓
