Today FMCMA took 5 cats (Buffy, Tayla, Clyde, Ally, and Smokey) to MU Shelter Medicine for spay and neuter surgeries. We are grateful to MU Shelter Medicine for providing the services they offer to rescue groups like ours. We are also grateful to volunteers that get the animals to and from their appointments. And we are super grateful to everyone that supports us through your donations.
But who we are most grateful for are owners like Kathi and Kenny who reached out for help as they could see that the cats they were caring for were rapidly multiplying.
We are often asked to remove cat colonies or find them homes. We don’t have the resources to do so, nor is it the correct solution. The best way to control overpopulation is to spay and neuter using TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) techniques. Colony cats need to be returned to where they were trapped in order to keep new unaltered cats from coming into the established territory. TNR requires a commitment by those caring for the colony. You need to be patient, consistent, and diligent. We don’t have the manpower to do all the work it requires to TNR a colony, but we can assist those who contact us. If you’re willing to do the work, it will be so worth the effort.
Today’s effort was an awesome first step in getting Kathi and Kenny’s cat situation under control because we were able to neuter two males and spay three females. Those three females alone could have doubled the colony size in a matter of months if they had not been spayed! We have more steps to follow to get their colony under control, but it can be done. 🐾❤️
