Simplistic but Smart: Dogs live in a world of immediate cause and effect. Their behaviors are often much more straightforward than the complex human emotions we project onto them.
The Power of the Nose: While we see the world, they *smell* it. Most of what we perceive as "disobedience" is actually just a dog being a dog in a scent-driven world.
At the end of the day, they don't need to understand our complex human ethics to be the best companions we've ever had. They are simply living in the moment, reacting to us, and doing their best to be part of our world.
