Ivan had an unfortunate run in with a bolt, just a couple of days after arriving at his new home. Lucky for him, his new family acted fast and has done thorough wound care to preserve the sutures and speed healing time.

The biggest hurdle with wounds like this is the swelling, the large amount of motion in this area, and keeping flies out of the wound while it heals. Regular hydrotherapy is my prescription in these cases to irrigate and promote tissue growth.

These photos show the initial wound, healing along the way, and then almost completely healed at 7.5 weeks.

I’m pretty pleased with how this looks!

Bundle Up!!
As you storm prep over the next day, here are a few things to remember so that your horses stay equally warm and healthy.
1. Fill an extra trough (or two) and keep it inside the barn. The horse’s body heat will help keep it from freezing, and it will give you a trough to break the ice on and refill buckets out of if you lose water supply to the barn.
2. Offer lukewarm water when possible!
3. Soak grain, and keep a constant supply of hay in front of your horses.
4. Make sure they have access to a place out of the wind/sleet.
5. Pick feet often! As horses walk they pack ice and snow into their feet and end up walking on balls of ice which can lead to slips and falls.
7. Don’t forget your donkeys, they don’t have as thick or waterproof a coat which makes them more susceptible to cold with rain and wintery mix. Let them under cover, and blanket them appropriately.

As road conditions decline, it may be hard for an ambulatory vet to get to you. Keep medications inside so they don’t freeze, and DO NOT feed a horse showing any colic symptoms. If you think your horse may be showing colic symptoms, take them off pasture and remove any grain or hay. With the winter storm please do not wait to call your vet, early on we may be able to get out to you but as things progress and roads get worse we may not be able to travel.

Happy Friday!

With the incoming cold front, here is your reminder to keep your horses hydrated. A horse should drink 10-15 gallons per day to prevent dehydration related colic.

Despite all preventative measures, if your horse starts showing signs of colic please call immediately! Colics caught earlier are far more treatable.

How do you care for wounds? When should you treat yourself, and when should you call a professional? Here are a few guidelines from your local veterinarian.

General Rules of Thumb
1. When you first see a wound, clip the surrounding hair, clean it thoroughly with betadine, and flush thoroughly with water.
2. Always contact your vet if the wound is causing a serious lameness, if the wound is located over a joint, or if there is discharge.
3. Contact your vet if you have a wound that is not healing properly.
4. Keep flies away from all wounds, summer sores are easier to prevent than treat. Additionally, New World Screwworm continues to move closer to our area and poses a considerable risk to livestock.
5. Avoid using caustic chemicals on wounds. Some common products I DO NOT recommend are Wonder Dust and Scarlet oil.
6. Keep wounds clean and moist. Contrary to old beliefs, moist wounds heal 3-5 times faster than dry wounds and with less visible scars.
7. Avoid using vetwrap directly on the skin and always use it over a padded bandage layer.
