Last week in Charlotte County, 60 cats were found abandoned on one property. Local Animal Control officers were notified of the cats after the owner was evicted, and our friends at SWAG Southern Welfare Animal Group Inc. jumped in to help. SWAG immediately began the search for outside assistance from other shelters and rescues in Virginia. With no organizations nearby prepared to house such an overwhelming number of cats, let alone treat the serious illness they were desperate. We, here at LHS, saw their callout and were able to save 12 of the youngest and sickest cats on the property. The last three were rescued from the property today and transported to us.
As for their condition, these images speak for themselves. Dozens of kittens and young adults were scavenging the property. Some older cats even nursed from the recently pregnant mom. These kittens are hungry, but most of all, they are in desperate need of medication and foster care. Our Medical Team is working hard to diagnose any hidden illnesses and treat their severe upper respiratory infections. Meanwhile, our Foster Team is on the search for long-term foster homes.
Nearly at capacity ourselves, we are grateful for the support of our community that enables us to lend a helping hand. We can not stress enough how important spaying and neutering is. It directly saves lives, and in this home, it could have prevented so much suffering.
The cats on this property are all young; while likely most were conceived in the home, there is also a chance this person picked them up from the streets with the best intentions, trying to help. If stories like this make you frustrated, getting upset won’t help, but getting involved will!
Contact your local TNR groups, spay/neuter clinics, or take a closer look at the cats in your community. We cannot change the past, but we can raise awareness, urge the community to speak up when animals are suffering, and hope to make a change one cat at a time!
We need your help to support these cats. They need medical care and foster homes. If you can donate, click the link below. If you can foster, email [email protected].
