This is Wyoming, this is the grind, this is the stuff that I hate but love so much, this is the stuff that makes you want to leave but you know you’d miss if you were gone😁
Between a backhoe, shovel and several hundred pounds of salt, I almost have a usable round pen again!
The smart ones get out or stop riding through the winter months…….the rest of us just do the best we can😁 **ts **tsdontwait

Object Nervousness!

I made a quick video today to show you how I go about helping a horse overcome being nervous or spooked by an object.

I know the old method and one many people are familiar with is applying pressure(kick, spur and whip) until they move toward the object then release. Not saying that is wrong, but I like this idea better!

To me this way helps them gain confidence much more effectively. What I will do is ride her toward the object(barrels and roping chute in this video) until it bothers her. I won’t push her, I won’t apply pressure, I will simply ride her toward it until she stops and fixates her attention on it. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART. Watch those eyes and ears! As soon as she gives you an eye, turns an ear back toward you, or both, I simply turn her and walk away! Retreat and reset. Go again. Each time she will gain more confidence and you will be surprised how quick they will overcome the fear! When I am happy with our progress, I’ll step off, loosen the cinch and quit. What we are doing here is saying, I acknowledge your concern, I’m here if you need me, let’s take our time and we’ll get through it.

To me this idea is no different than our kids being afraid of the dark. If we are there as guiding support, help them through it but DON’T MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT. Eventually they decide it’s not an issue and if goes away.

Give it a try, let me know how it works, what you guys think and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask!😊

When mistakes happen, we believe in making them right!
When we did the contest this fall for the breeding giveaway to Blue Molly, we had one entry slip through the cracks and end up in our spam folder(we should’ve been keeping an eye on it🤦‍♂️), and it was a really good entry! We have decided to give KoDale a breeding also! We can’t wait to work with you to breed your mare and watch you work towards your goals!!!!

Agenda!
One of the most restrictive things there is when it comes to horse training!

Having a plan but being able to bend when needed has helped me get alot more accomplished when in the training pen!

Tonight I had planned to work on stops, we saddled and walked into the pen. For whatever reason, Blue would back away every time I’d approach, he was a little bothered by me. Seeing this, our plans changed. We worked a little at getting him comfortable with me walking up to him and when he relaxed, I pulled the saddle, let him soak in the moment and put him up for the night.

It wasn’t a big thing and I could’ve easily pushed past it and went ahead with the plan and trust me I’ve made that mistake many times! Tonight I chose to deviate from the plan and I can promise he will be a better horse tomorrow because of it!

Remember, always have a plan but be willing to bend🙂
