As the day falls...

Humans and dogs do not share the same sleep cycles, humans are a bit more programmed.

Humans have decided to work all day and sleep all night, dogs continue to operate on a less rigid sleeping schedule. However, dogs tend to sleep more overall than humans do, up to 14 hours on average.

Dogs are active at various times throughout the day and night, and they prefer to separate these active times by short naps as opposed to long, deep sleep.

The age and size of your dog plays a large role in how much sleep it needs, and also determines how excitable your dog will be during its active hours. Puppies and larger dogs sleep more than older, smaller dogs.

Since a dog can sleep or become active more or less at will, dogs tend to adopt similar sleeping patterns as their owners, although it doesn’t always translate.

BBCRs 2020 Holiday Gift Basket Giveaway Award Winner

As the coronavirus is a rapidly developing news story we realize that the pandemic is causing massive social upheaval: school closures, health scares, widespread lockdowns, and a great deal of other unprecedented concerns.

During these times, the Bull Breed Coalition Registry (BBCR) thought to host a “Night Before Christmas” photo contest to bring the holiday spirit right to the homes of friends and families. Hoping submitted photos would bring joy and help make an impact in people’s lives.

The BBCR was established in 2004 and has since grown to be a worldwide recognized bull breed registry. CEO, Kamerion Wimbley and the BBCR organization understand the importance of supporting the community they serve.

Since Wimbley acquired the BBCR, they have hosted many events including but not limited to confirmation, weight pulling, and community givebacks such as “American Bully’s Against Bullying” and “Back to School Bash Books and Bags”.

While the BBCR plans to have confirmation shows in 2021, the health and safety of our community supporters are our first priority. Shown in 2020 COVID-19 has affected many of our friends, families, and the communities we live within.

However, Woonsocket, RI’s Sergio Rodriguez is one individual who, gratefully, has not directly been affected by the world’s pandemic. In a time where dogs are more popular than ever, his beautiful tri-colored American Bully has been crowned the 2020 ‘Night Before Christmas’ photo contest winner.

Oh, it's cold outside. But, how cold its too cold?

Health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes can make dogs more susceptible to the cold, according to the American Veterinary Medicine Association. You should also factor in wind chill and other weather conditions like rain, sleet, or snow that can make the great outdoors even more chilly for dogs.

While the exact temperature that dogs get cold varies, you should not keep your dog outside for an extended period of time if the temperature drops to 30 degrees and below.

In some cases, even if your dog is kept inside it is possible for your dog to get cold. Keeping blankets, dog beds, and a warm place to snuggle is a good idea just in case.

3. USE AN ANTI-CHEW SPRAY AT HOME
Protect your furniture and accessories by spraying an anti-chew spray. With a naturally unpleasant taste, it will discourage your canine from chewing on carpets, curtains and furniture.

Let's talks safety tips for the Winter...

Consider Your Canines Age... more often then not old dogs have a hard time regulating their body temperatures.

Bundle Your Dog Up... Most dogs have their own coat, however, small, delicate, and short-haired dogs may have a harder time keeping warm.

Trim the Fuzz... Dogs hair on their feet can form ice balls between pads and toes.

Clean Feet... Make sure you wash off your dog's feet as there are a lot of substances that cover the city streets.

If you take your canine out side or allow them to roam around... be mindful of thin ice in the area. It might look like fun to slide across that frozen pond, but ice can easily crack.

Preventing Winter Health Risks

There are two serious cold weather conditions that should be considered.

First... Frostbite
Frostbite begins when the dog’s body gets cold. The body automatically pulls blood from the extremities to the center of the body to stay warm.

The dog’s ears, paws or tail can get so cold that ice crystals can form in the tissue and damage it. The tricky thing to remember about frostbite is that it’s not immediately obvious.

Watch for signs of pale or grey skin; the skin may also turn hard and cold. As frostbitten areas warm, they can be extremely painful. Severely frostbitten skin will eventually turn black and slough off.

A second serious winter weather concern is hypothermia. This occurs when a dog spends too much time in the cold, gets wet in cold temperatures or when dogs with poor health or circulation are exposed to cold.

In mild cases, the dog will shiver and her ears and feet may grow cold. As hypothermia progresses, she may show signs of depression, lethargy and weakness.

As the condition worsens, her muscles will stiffen, her heart and breathing rates slow down, and she will not respond to stimuli. Severe hypothermia is life threatening.

Protecting your dog from frostbite and hypothermia is essential, so learn how to recognize the signs that your dog needs to come indoors to warm up.

There have been many conversations around the topic of weather or not pets transmit the coronavirus.

According to the FDA, at this time, there is no evidence that pets, including cats and dogs, play a role in spreading COVID-19 to people. The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person, typically through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking.

However, your canines sniffer could help be a vital towards helping detect the virus with almost perfect accuracy when properly trained.
