I haven’t posted much on Jay in the past couple weeks.

So Jay likes to kick. I was aware of this when I got him and was being cautious but yet trying to find his trigger. More or less just his reaction to something he is scared of. This is something I’ve been working on since being kicked pretty hard a few weeks ago. Basically all I’ve done is put a rope around his leg and apply pressure once he starts kicking “reacting “ I hold the pressure till he stops looks at me and relaxes then he gets his leg back. My goal is to make him turn to me when unsure instead of reacting by kicking. Its a process but feel I have made small progress in the right direction.

He is super smart and a quick learner.

Jay and I walking around the pasture together. He is getting better and better about leading. I’ve also been working on picking up his front feet, this is all stuff he knew when I got him, it’s taken him time to trust me and let me do it without being nervous. He really doesn’t like when I dance around like a freak. He is starting to realize I’m just crazy and for the most part just stands and let’s me do my thing then will walk back to me. The first time he lost all marbles but he is starting to realize it’s not so scary. We as people are noisy and unpredictable. That’s just something he needs to get use to.

Jay worked on leading and got his mane all brushed out today. He was a good boy 🥰

The join up. This doesn’t happen on day one. And doesn’t work with every horse. But It takes time and consistency. Everyday going out and asking again and again. Asking him to move his feet change directions then backing away. Give him the choice to come. Today was that day. He chose to join me. Today, day 3, was a good day and a good start.

Working with Jay today (aka Jack). Just working on press and release. What I mean by this is I’m going to create pressure with how I move towards him, once he moves I back off and release the pressure. Then I’ll move and get him to change directions, again once he moves from the pressure I release. One day of doing this and he will now walk and reverse. All this by just how I position my body. I have not clipped a rope on him. I want him to know he is not being forced. I will move at his pace and I will gain his trust. He hasn’t figured it all out yet but in time he will come to me. He will trust me. I will not force the relationship we are going to have. It takes time.

Yesterday I took a little road trip to go look at a potential personal project horse for me to work on. After playing with him for awhile I decided he was the one I was looking for. He is smart. Calm. Has a very relaxed eye and he wants to please.
So a little background info on him. His name is jack. He was a Nevada mustang who was round up as a yearling in 2020. He was with the previous owner for 2years. I was told because it took him a couple years to mentally get were he needed to be to move on to his new home. He’s only been really handled the last few weeks and has made great progress in learning the basics of leading and moving away from pressure. I am ready and excited for this new challenge.
Follow my page for his training progress and updates.

Ground work is essential in training. I start all my horses with the basic concepts of leading. How to walk with me, how to move away from me when asked, how to follow me, how to stop when I stop. I can control the direction of their feet by moving my body and feet. Horses are thousand pound animals and if they don’t understand personal space they can seriously hurt me or anyone handling them if basic ground work is not established. Ground work is my first step in training. By the time I am done I can let a child lead without a worry. If she stops he will stop. If she moves in any direction he will either move away or follow. No pushing. No pulling. No walking on top of her. It all starts on the ground with teaching basic respect and boundaries.
