On June 24th, Ellen Trout Zoo’s ectotherm team released 27 Louisiana pine snakes into the wild in the Kisatchie National Forest! This marks a huge conservation milestone, as Louisiana pine snakes are endangered and one of the rarest snakes in North America.
The Ellen Trout Zoo is one of only four institutions caring for this species in the United States, along with , Fort Worth Zoo, and Audubon Zoo.
Since 2013, Ellen Trout Zoo has hatched a total of 220 Louisiana pine snakes, and f those, 121 have been released to the wild. Even more good news, the snakes living in the zoo’s pine snake off-site breeding facility have laid 85 eggs so far this year!
