Hats off to you Hills - still absolutely refusing to get on board with a single canine nutrition principle that has come out over the last decade.
Check out this snapshot I just took off Zooplus of Hill's Science Plan Adult Advanced Fitness Large Breed with Chicken. In what feels like a big two fingers from a fat bald guy laughing his head off in a sports car, you can see in this product that the "meat" ingredient is now third in the list of ingredients. These are done by order of weight (and the cereals go in dry, which makes a huge difference, imagine if they dried the "meat" first?!).
Shocked? Don't be. The key is in the title "with chicken". In Pet Food Land, where nothing is upside down and nothing is as it seems, "with" means it contains 4% meat-waste.
Not that being first in the list would guarantee you anything. If that happens, dry food manufacturers will load five or six cereal ingredients right after it, ensure the "meat" (let's face it, guts, unless you can name another part that is not used in chicken nuggest?!) is still but a token in the overall mix.
Unlike in human products, the ingredients list of a pet food product is just another place to trick the consumer. They don't have to state their carbs. Recently they stopped saying using the word "meal" (for our sake because the "internet" has lead us astray, I s**t you not, they are now, illegally, using the word "dried" or "dehydrated", which I think we all agree sounds much more nutritious than the dregs of a rendering plant which processes all our spoiled meat waste).

And for this customers spend €45 on a 15kg bag, €3 per kilo, the same price as actual fresh, yummy, highly nutritious chicken off the shelf of the supermarket.
Hill's remain the biggest cash sponsor of veterinary universities and governing bodies today. They also just happen to be the manufacturer of choice for the vast majority of our vets today. These two things have nothing to do with each other though!!!

For dog sake, make this weekend you give your dog a little real food. It's infinitely tastier, infinitely more nutritious and infinitely better for their healthy. It's so easy to do and begins with adding in a raw egg, a pinch of fresh beef mince or a nice meaty bone.
