🐾 GROOMING EDUCATION: LET’S TALK ABOUT MATTING 🐾
Vanity-free. Cruelty-free. Just how it ought to be. ❤️
One of the most important parts of professional grooming isn’t just knowing how to remove hair — it’s knowing when trying to save that hair is no longer in the best interest of the animal.
So, let’s talk about matting, dematting, and why our approach is different for cats and dogs.
🐱 WHY WE DO NOT DEMAT CATS
At Fresh Pawz, our policy is ZERO dematting on cats.
A mat isn’t simply a knot sitting on top of the coat. As hair becomes tangled together, it can tighten and pull against the skin underneath. Movement can cause that tight hair to continually tug on the skin.
Cats also have very thin, delicate and mobile skin, which is one reason cat grooming requires such careful handling.
Trying to repeatedly brush, pick or comb apart tight mats can cause pain, irritation and increase the risk of skin injury.
And here’s something many pet parents don’t realize:
💧 A bath isn’t always the first step for a matted pet.
Water doesn’t magically loosen established mats. Tight matting can become even more compact as it gets wet and dries, which is why we assess the coat before deciding whether bathing is appropriate.
🐱 THERE’S ALSO A BEHAVIORAL SAFETY FACTOR
Cats don’t always give us a long warning when they’ve had enough.
A cat may tolerate handling initially and then reach its threshold very quickly when it’s frightened, uncomfortable, overstimulated or experiencing pain.
They may suddenly twist, bite, scratch, kick or attempt to escape.
That can become dangerous for the groomer, but it can also become dangerous for the cat.
The more a frightened cat struggles, the harder it becomes to safely work around their delicate skin with grooming equipment.
That’s why we don’t believe in repeatedly restraining and fighting with a cat just to preserve coat.
The hair is never more important than the cat wearing it.
For that reason, our rule is simple:
🐱 Cats = ZERO dematting.
🐶 WHAT ABOUT DOGS?
Dogs are evaluated differently.
At Fresh Pawz, we will perform LIGHT dematting on dogs when the tangles or small mats can be worked through reasonably and comfortably.
That might involve appropriate grooming products, conditioning, brushing and careful coat work.
But there’s an important difference between brushing out a few tangles and attempting to save an extensively matted coat.
Dematting creates tension on the hair and skin. The more severe and widespread the matting is, the more brushing, pulling and manipulation would be required to remove it.
There comes a point where preserving a longer haircut simply isn’t worth what the dog would have to endure to achieve it.
That’s where humanity over vanity comes in.
✂️ HUMANITY OVER VANITY DOESN’T MEAN “SHAVE EVERYTHING”
This is important too!
Being humanity-over-vanity doesn’t mean we’re looking for an excuse to shave every dog short.
If your dog has a healthy coat with a few tangles or light matting that can safely and reasonably be worked through, we’ll put the work in.
I’m not going to put a #10 blade on an entire dog simply because brushing takes longer.
But I’m also not going to spend a grooming appointment repeatedly pulling and brushing through extensive matting just to preserve a fluffy haircut.
There has to be a humane middle ground.
Sometimes we can save the coat.
Sometimes a shorter haircut is the kinder choice.
And sometimes we may determine that a particular service isn’t safe or appropriate for that animal.
❤️ MATTING ISN’T A MORAL JUDGMENT
This might be the most important part.
A matted pet does not automatically equal a bad pet owner.
Coat texture, moisture, friction, collars and harnesses, activity level, grooming tolerance, missed brushing areas and the amount of time between professional grooms can all contribute to tangles and matting.
Areas like behind the ears, armpits, legs, belly, tail and places where collars or harnesses rub can be especially easy to miss.
Our job isn’t to shame anyone.
Our job is to assess the pet that’s in front of us and choose the safest, kindest grooming option for that animal.
I’ve carried this philosophy throughout the 7–8 years I’ve been grooming on my own, and it’s one of the reasons having my own business has always been so important to me.
I can advocate for the animal on my table.
I can put in the extra work when it’s reasonable.
And I can say no when I believe continuing would cause unnecessary pain, stress or risk.
At the end of the day, we’re working with living animals — not just haircuts. ❤️
