Did you know pets can develop arthritis just like humans? In fact, arthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting both dogs and cats, especially as they get older. Since May is Arthritis Awareness Month, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn how arthritis impacts pets and what you can do to help keep them comfortable, mobile, and happy.

So what is arthritis? Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Because it usually develops gradually, the signs can be easy to miss at first. Many pets—particularly cats—are very good at masking pain, which makes routine veterinary visits and close observation at home especially important.

While some symptoms, such as limping or trouble standing up, are more obvious, many signs of arthritis are subtle and often mistaken for normal aging. Some changes to watch for are less interest in playtime, changes in grooming, behavioral changes, hesitations to jump/climb, accidents in the house or outside the litter box, stiffness or changes in posture and sleeping more than usual.

If you’ve noticed any of these changes—even subtle ones—it may be time to schedule a wellness exam. Identifying arthritis early can greatly improve your pet’s comfort, mobility, and overall quality of life.

These are a few of our patients that came to see us for their arthritic needs. Contact us at (806) 794-9000 to schedule an appointment!

Live Oak reception team- hallelujah 10 phone lines ringing- hallelujah 27 walk-in appointments before close- hallelujah! WHAT A WEEK! This week is Veterinary Receptionist week, and let us be the first to say- we couldn’t ask for better! From greeting our patients, answering phones, and managing the chaos that is in fact our daily lives. We are beyond thankful for our reception staff and all that they do. We couldn’t do it without them! Our primary receptionists were so busy this week, we had to have our part time help fill in for the photo-op! 😉
