Chiqui is up for adoption! ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐โค๏ธ
Back in the beginning of November I had made a post about one of our own dogs returning back to our program. It wasnt an easy phone call to take regarding the situation of 2 dogs getting into a fight and just going at it until they were ripped apart. That is never an easy situation to be in. Ever! The decision was for the family to let go of the younger one which was Chiqui. And of course I will do anything and everything to make that happen. After all she was one of our pups produced in our program. So, I needed to make room out at our kennel to get her situated, evaluated and assessed.
So at that time the basic info I was given about Chiqui is that she is almost 2 years old, spayed, crate trained, lovable but has shown aggression towards their female dog in the household multiple times where they got into a fight. Never the male dog. However, when asking her previous family for help in understanding her and help identifying the underlining reasons for her fighting their other female, it was not clear and wasnโt identified. ๏ฟผWas it a toy, a bone, resource gaurding her kennel? Im not sure and Iโll never know since I donโt know the other dogs Chiqui lived with or the familys methods of training and what they provided for them. I just knew that I needed her back. A Rescue.
So, we got her into our care and she needed to be accessed and evaluate immediately. She was in bad shape with a few injuries, a severe ear infection abdominal bruising, very overweight, resourse guarding her crate, insecure and very anxious. My work was cut out for me.
Now, fast forward to her current rehabilitation here in our program. I first want to say Chiqui has done AMAZING! Considering what I needed to do to figure out what her underlining issues where and what I needed to do in order to make her successful in a home that she would thrive in. It was a puzzle to figure out. But the easist was getting her healed up which she had healed up nicely from those injuries and ear infection. Now, to help rewire and break habits and rebuilding her mindset. Providing her with excersise, calmness, rules, boundaries and limitations was my goal as Ceasar Millan would say. Building trust.
Chiqui has routine with a structured environment which has changed her behavior tremendously. And that is success! All our training we provide her with is in small steps and small interactions with my pack members to build trust. She has multiple excersise activities to release her energy which help her prior to training. As far as her interaction with my pack I find her being playful and understanding her place in it. She has played well with my pack and has not shown any aggression. In fact the complete opposite. Avoidance. No eye contact and keeps to herself.
With all that being said she will need a family willing to provide her with all these things and willingness to continue her rehabilitation. She is indeed a very sweet, lovable and eager to please dog. Makes great eye contact and walks beautifully on a leash. NO harness! Food motivated but keep in mind would become obese if you allowed it.
If I can give anyone a piece of advice through my experience it would be PREVENTION is so much easier than INTERVENTION.
Please feel free to reach out and ask any questions you might have regarding Chiqui. Understand, she is rehabilitating and will take time and dedication on your part so she can be the best Golden Retriever!
