After only a few sessions with George, you can see how quickly he settles into his down position.

Clip #1: George is working both his “place” command and his “down”command.

Clip #2: George is working on his “place” and release command. In order to ensure that the dog understands his “you’re free” command, random words are said to make sure that the dog does not come off his place until he hears the proper command.

Khaleesi’s very first session learning “place.” In the first video, you can clearly see her reluctance to step on. After a few minutes, she has no issue stepping on and is quickly picking up on her release command.

Tip:
When teaching a dog “place,” it’s important to not ‘pull’ the dog on, but to lure instead.

When a dog is apprehensive to get on, it’s important to help them feel comfortable and reassure them. As soon as the dog steps on “place,” it’s vital to reward them. This helps to condition the wanted behavior.
