New plant profile 🌿: Java Fern β€” the plant that survives the tanks nothing else survives. No CO2, no substrate, no special light β€” just one rule: never bury the rhizome. Tie it or glue it to wood or rock, leave the rhizome in open water, and it grows slowly for years. The dark spots in two neat rows under a mature leaf aren't disease β€” they're sori, spore cases, the sign of a healthy plant. Full care guide in our new Aquatic Plant Library.

New species profile 🐠: Tiger Barb β€” four bold black bars, red-tinged fins, and a fin-nipping reputation that is mostly a stocking problem. Kept in schools of 8–10 in a 20-gallon tank at 68–79Β°F, the group's attention stays inward; kept in twos and threes next to angelfish or fancy guppies, it earns the reputation. Honest tankmate guidance, egg-scatter breeding, and why dye-injected "painted" barbs are a practice to avoid β€” full guide at the link.

New species profile 🐠: Shortfin Molly β€” the wild fish behind almost every molly in the hobby. Wild-type sphenops is olive-silver with dark speckles and rows of orange dots; the familiar black molly descends from crosses with the sailfin mollies. What it needs is simple: hard, alkaline water (pH 7.0–8.5) at 70–82Β°F, a 20–30 gallon group tank, and plenty of vegetable matter. Salt is not required β€” hard minerals are. New species profile 🐠: Sailfin Molly β€” the livebearer with a sail. When a male displays, he raises a dorsal fin like a fan, sometimes twice the height of his body. Wild fish are olive and spotted β€” nothing like the velvet-black morphs in most shops. The one non-negotiable: hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.5) at 68–82Β°F, a 30-gallon tank minimum, and an algae-rich diet. In soft water they shimmy, clamp, and fail fast. Full care and breeding guide at the link.

New species profile 🐠: Boeseman's Rainbowfish β€” the two-tone classic. The front half of a mature male is blue-grey, the rear half orange-yellow, split almost down the middle. That color is earned, not bought: it takes warm, hard, alkaline water (77–86Β°F, pH 7.0–8.0), a 48-inch tank, a group of six or more, and patience β€” males keep improving into their second year. Wild fish are Endangered, confined to the Ayamaru Lakes of West Papua, so buy captive-bred and keep Melanotaenia lines pure. Full care and mop-spawning breeding guide at the link.
