Wachiwi. Walker. Anakin.

No rush. No fear. No chaos.

This is what sanctuary looks like.

They don’t have to be anything here.
They just get to be.

And that’s everything 🤍🐴

Roja — safe, healthy, and thriving at ROAR.

Sanctuary is quiet work. It doesn’t look like drama. It looks like consistency.

Winter Care at ROAR

Donkeys are not horses, and their care—especially in winter weather—must reflect that.

Unlike horses, donkeys evolved in arid climates and do not have the same natural oils in their coats to repel moisture. Cold, wet conditions can put them at higher risk for hypothermia, respiratory illness, and joint stiffness. Because of this, dry, enclosed shelter and consistent access to forage are critical during storms.

Ahead of this winter system, ROAR prepared by:
• Ensuring enclosed, dry shelters were accessible across the property
• Placing hay and feed inside shelters, so animals did not have to choose between warmth and food
• Securing wind breaks, deepening bedding, and monitoring water sources

It’s also important to understand that animals make their own choices.

Rescue work does not always happen on camera. Daily preparation, care, and monitoring continue whether or not photos or videos are posted. Animal welfare is measured by husbandry and preparedness—not social media frequency.

We also want to acknowledge how heartbreaking it is to hear of losses at donkey & equine haven within our local rescue community during this storm. Losing animals is devastating under any circumstances, and our hearts are with those who are grieving. Anyone who does this work understands how heavy those losses are, especially during extreme weather.

Thank you to everyone who supports informed, responsible animal care and who shows compassion—for both animals and the people caring for them—during challenging times.

Dennis the Menace & Martha the Mini Zebu 🫏🐂

Friendship doesn’t always announce itself loudly.
Sometimes it shows up softly… standing close in the cold, sharing hay, choosing each other.

Dennis doesn’t share his hay with just anyone.
But for Martha, he makes an exception—every time. No guarding. No grumbling. Just trust.

Maybe it’s love.
Maybe it’s comfort.
Maybe it’s two souls who feel safer together in a big world.

Whatever it is, it’s gentle.
And it’s beautiful.

This is why sanctuary matters.
Because when animals are given peace, they get to choose connection. 🤍

Theodore has concerns.

Cold weather was NOT listed in the job description.
The zebus normally refuse to leave the shelter in cold or rain, but today tricked them into thinking it was safe.

He is now outside, offended, and requesting HR immediately.

🚨 Weather Prep Mode On 🚨

We have horrible weather coming in and we’re getting ahead of it. We’ll be heading out to pick up alfalfa — $800 total for 4 bales, each weighing 1,500 lbs.

When cold weather hits, horses burn more calories just to stay warm, which means they eat more. Having plenty of forage isn’t optional — it’s how they keep their body temperature up and stay healthy through the cold.

Every bale matters. Every pound matters.
Thank you for helping us make sure full bellies keep our horses warm and safe this winter.

Dennis the Menace 💥

Dennis is one of a kind—equal parts handful and lovable menace. He will absolutely run over anything (or anyone) for a sweet treat, and he knows it.

A while back, Dennis was injured and we separated him so we could keep a close eye on him. What we didn’t expect was how anxious that would make him. So we changed the plan. It wasn’t easier or more convenient for us, but it was better for him. We moved him back into a small herd where he could feel safe, calm, and supported—and that’s where he truly started to heal.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what this is all about: doing what’s best for them, even when it’s harder for us. 💛

Poncho is why we exist.

He came to us scared of humans—fearful, guarded, expecting that being “caught” would mean pain or punishment. Today, he’s the first one to step forward for a cookie. Not because he wants attention, not because he suddenly loves being touched—but because humans no longer equal fear.

He chooses proximity.
He chooses safety.
And that choice matters.

Poncho doesn’t like being touched, and that’s okay. Sanctuary isn’t about forcing affection. It’s about giving animals the freedom to exist without fear, pressure, or expectation.

As winter settles in, there’s no new grass growing. The quiet months still require full bellies, warm bodies, and steady care. Animals like Poncho depend on consistent hay to get through the season.

This isn’t an emergency.
There’s no crisis language.
No heartbreak photos.

This is simply sanctuary—quiet, peaceful, and ongoing.

If you’re able to support our Winter Hay Fundraiser, you’re helping ensure animals like Poncho continue to live a life where safety is the norm, not the exception.

Thank you for believing in slow trust, quiet healing, and the kind of sanctuary that doesn’t need to shout to be worthy of support 🤍
