As I pivot all of my in-person services to NOCO Unleashed, I have decided to keep Dogs Deciphered as an educational resource for pet owners as well as pet professionals. I will be starting a webinar series, where I will cover one topic every month relating to dog behavior and training. It is my hope to create a low cost educational opportunities, and have a wide reach so that anyone who is in need of this information can access it.

I invite you to join me for my first webinar, which will be presented Monday, October 25th at 5:30pm MT. I will be talking about one of my favorite topics, Back Door Solutions, or what to do when what you are trying isn't working! If you are interested in learning more, you can register at https://dogs-deciphered-online.thinkific.com/. A recording will be available after the presentation, and all registrants will get ongoing access to the recording.

Today is Disabled Pets Day! I've seen a lot of folks calling it "Specially-Abled Pets Day" and I wanted to share why I think it's important to consider the words we use. It's actually pretty difficult to find a disabled adult out there who prefers being called "specially-abled" or "handicapable." So, what's the reason for this?
::
I think it's because using these terms instead of just using "disabled" implies that disability is inherently bad and we need to change it. It also infantilizes disabled individuals. The reality is that disability exists on a spectrum. There are disabled people who need full-time caretakers and there are disabled people who work full time -- not unlike how disability also exists on a wide spectrum within the world of pets!
::
I think it's important to change this language because when we use things like "specially-abled," we teach other people that this is the proper language to use when it's actually the language that is often harmful to disabled people. So, today I will celebrate Dylan (who is truly one of the loves of my life), who has numerous disabilities. Not only is he a badass for dealing with what life throws his way, but he is just an amazing dang dog. Happy Disabled Pets Day to everyone out there -- consider not only adopting dogs with disabilities, but also please consider the language you use and why!

Join us for Part 2 in our Winter Webinar Series - Little Rockstars: Training with Small Dogs!

We are so excited for this webinar! We'll be covering lots of training topics specific to small dogs, like reinforcement strategies for small bellies, safety skills for adventuring in a big-dog's world, and making sure that our small dogs are learning good skills instead of relying only on the easy leash (and other) management that we can often get away with when our dog is under 30lbs!

Join head trainer, Amber, on Wednesday January 13th at 5:00pm MST via Zoom to learn more about training with your little rockstar! Tuition is $20 and includes a recording of the webinar in case you can't make it at that specific time or just want to rewatch!

This is an important topic that does not get enough discussion. I am excited to see more content written about the transition of moving in with an aging parent, because it's something I've helped clients through in the past, and it can be a difficult transition for all.

When I moved in with my eighty-three-year-old mother to help take care of her, that was challenging for me in itself. But I also had two active dogs that were used to getting lots of exercise and attention, who had spent most of their time with two middle-aged adults. They didn't ask to be moved [.....

Wanna know a training secret? Some of your dog’s highest value rewards are probably FREE.

Yup. No cost. Zero dollars.

Hulk loves food a LOT. It’s one of his favorite things. But you know what he loves more? Jumping on stuff! People, couches, tree stumps... you name it, he’ll jump on it. To help him maintain calm attention around distractions, we taught him that jumping on things when we ask him to is not only allowed, but encouraged.

That means that if Hulk is on a walk and there’s a difficult trigger we have to help him walk by - kids running and playing, a yappy dog in a yard, a group of people on scooters - we have a completely no-cost reward as our emergency backup!

We need a pick me up from all this election stress! Show me a video of something your dog does that makes you laugh. If you can't get a video, post a picture of your dog, and tell their funny stories!
