Let's be real, how many choices do your dogs actually make? We decide when it's meal time, walk time, snuggle time, bedtime, and often potty time. And, this can be okay! But when it comes to training, giving our dogs a choice can make or break a training session.

Obviously, we are not going to let our dogs run towards their trigger (even though I'd argue they don't actually want to. When you get anxious about something, is that actually a choice?) But we are going to give them an option of what to do instead. Do you want to take a treat? Do you want to walk with me? Do you want to play a pattern game?

This lets our dogs have some sense of control. This control builds confidence. This confidence helps us overcome the reactivity! 👏 which is, of course, is the ultimate goal.

So, hand out more cookies, let your dog choose which route to take on your walk, and consider their emotions.

There is not a quick fix to reactivity training, but offering your dog more automany will help speed their learning along!
