Foundations Friday: Building Eye Contact 👀🐾

Want your dog to focus more on you? Start by teaching eye contact—and the easiest way to do that is through capturing!

Dogs naturally offer eye contact throughout the day, so take advantage of those moments. When your dog looks at you, mark it with a cheerful “YES!” and reward them with something they love—treats, toys, or praise.

Why does this matter?
Eye contact is a key foundation for communication and focus. It helps your dog tune in to you during training, in distracting environments, or when you need their attention fast. By reinforcing it, you're creating a stronger connection and setting the stage for more advanced behaviors.

The more you reward it, the more they'll offer it—without even being asked!

Mindful Mondays: Reinforcement in Action!

This month, we’re exploring 5 ways we reinforce our dogs’ behavior—whether we mean to or not!

TOYS are a fantastic way to reward behaviors we like, such as following known cues (like sit or wait) or offering polite behaviors like eye contact or patience. Think about it: what does your dog do before you toss that ball or hand over the tug toy? That behavior is being reinforced!

But be mindful—unwanted behaviors can be reinforced too. If your dog barks, jumps, or demands before getting their toy, and still gets it, those behaviors are likely to happen again.

This week, observe your dog’s behavior right before they get something they love. That’s the moment that shapes their learning.

🕒🐾 Time-Based Training Thursday: 5 Minutes to Better Door Manners! 🚪✨

Got 5 minutes? That’s all you need to start teaching your dog polite door behavior! 🐶

Does your pup rush the door the second it opens? Try this simple daily routine to teach calm, polite behavior:

1️⃣ With leash on, and high value treats in hand - Ask for a Sit
Have your dog sit calmly next to the door.

2️⃣ Open the Door Slightly
Once they’re sitting, crack the door open.

3️⃣ Reward for Patience
If your dog stays put, immediately reward them with a favorite treat!

4️⃣ Reset if Needed
If they try to bolt—no problem! Gently close the door and ask for a sit again.

5️⃣ Build Duration
Repeat steps 2 & 3, gradually opening the door wider (aim for a foot or more) while your dog stays in place.

6️⃣ Look for Eye Contact 👁️
With the door open, wait. When your dog offers eye contact, that’s your cue...

7️⃣ Release with a Cue!
Say your release word (like “Free!”) and let them go through the door.

Watching the dog's progression each session and seeing every small breakthrough feels like a huge win. Whether it’s mastering a new trick, overcoming a fear, learning different coping skills around other dogs, or building trust within themselves and the world around them!
