If your dog comes home from a walk more jacked up than when they left, you are not “exercising” your dog. You are rehearsing stress.

Not every dog thrives marching through suburbia on a 4 foot leash past barking dogs, screaming kids, bikes, and overstimulation for an hour straight. Especially working breeds, anxious dogs, and reactive dogs. That’s not decompression, it’s emotional cardio.

We live in Colorado for goodness sake. Go find a field. A hike. A long line. Let your dog RUN. Sniff. Explore. Chase a ball. Climb a rock. Be a dog.

Life is not supposed to happen entirely at the end of a tight leash.

Incoming hot take before Facebook Karen starts typing in all caps:

I love rescue work. I literally spend a huge amount of my life fostering, rehabbing, and helping dogs that others gave up on. But I also think people do themselves and dogs a disservice by pretending every dog starts on equal footing.

Genetics matter. Early socialization matters. Health matters. Previous life experiences matter.

Can shelter dogs become incredible family dogs? Absolutely. Can breeder dogs still end up with issues? Absolutely.

But if someone comes to me with toddlers, specific goals, sport aspirations, service work, or needing a very predictable temperament? I’m probably pointing them toward an ethical breeder.

Stop making it adopt OR shop. Make it:

Adopt responsibly. Buy responsibly. Think responsibly.

Alright. I’ll be in the comments with snacks. 😈

Indy came to us carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. A 4 year old Dobbie/pittie mix who had gotten stuck in the cycle of tension, insecurity, and household fights until everyone in the home was walking on eggshells. With a human baby due any day, life was starting to feel impossible for his family and honestly… Indy wasn’t happy either.

Fast forward 5–6 weeks into his behavioral B&T (yes yes I know I suck at posting updates 💀) and this dog is becoming an entirely different version of himself.

The dog who used to shake in public now drags me through new places because he’s SO excited to explore life. He’s playful. He’s confident. He’s curious. But most importantly? He’s HAPPY.

And when you’ve seen a dog fully shut down emotionally… seeing happiness come back into their eyes will wreck you every single time.

This weekend Indy had his first meet back up with his sister and the difference was insane. No longer the dog looking for conflict every second he felt uncomfortable. He’s learning how to walk away, decompress, trust the humans around him, and exist without carrying the pressure of the world on his shoulders. Ironically this time his sister was the tighter one 👀

We still have integration work ahead of us, but now we have something huge:
clarity, trust, communication, and a dog who finally feels safe enough to just… live.

THIS is why we love behavioral work. Watching dogs go from surviving to actually enjoying life again is the coolest s**t on earth.

Can’t wait to watch Indy step into his new role as big brother chaos supervisor 💚

A month ago Indy was hitting the streets lookin like he owed the IRS money. Shaking, shivering, overwhelmed by literally existing in public.

Fast forward a month and now this dude is dragging me through stores like he’s got a flight to catch and 47 side quests to complete. Sniffing everything, exploring confidently, engaging with people, existing like a NORMAL DOG instead of living in survival mode.

And honestly? This is the side of behavior work people don’t talk about enough. Sometimes the fights at home, the stiffness, the constant tension… come from a dog who simply doesn’t know how to exist confidently in the world. Once the shell cracks open, you start seeing the real dog underneath all the anxiety and pressure.

Watching Indy learn how to just be a dog again has been one of the coolest transformations to watch. Now we start seeing how this confidence transfers back home with his sister and everyday life. Proud of this little weirdo.

‼️Peak K-9 Day School will be closed June 10th–17th(ish) ‼️because we’re loading up the chaos crew and heading out on a very important ✨dog related field trip✨.

Private lessons will also be taking a tiny vacation, BUT Matt will still be holding down the fort for boarding for those already booked in, with very limited spots for anyone else needing boarding while we’re gone.

Now the real question is… where do you think the PK9 chaos mobile is headed 👀🐕💨

Hint: it involves dogs. A lot of dogs. Probably questionable decisions. Maybe bitey things.

Chicken Nugget tried the full FAFO package—gator rolls, fish flops, leash grabbing… the whole dramatic performance to avoid the crate 🍗💀

And listen, I respect the hustle. It worked before. If throwing a tantrum gets you out of pressure, why wouldn’t you keep doing it?

But today was the “find out” portion.

We kept steady leash pressure on—not cranking on him, not overwhelming him, just enough to say “yeah… that’s not getting you out of this anymore, bud.” Because confidence isn’t built by escaping every uncomfortable feeling, it’s built by realizing you can go through it and survive.

Once he stopped arguing with the pressure and actually moved with it, guess what happened? Walked into the crate, found the hotdogs, started making better choices like a civilized little goblin.

This part of training isn’t always cute, and it’s definitely not the highlight reel people love to post, but it’s real life. I’m not here to help dogs avoid everything hard, I’m here to show them they can handle it without losing their minds. If yall want I’ll post the full 4 min video so yall can see the full picture happen

Fairbanks turns 12 this coming Sunday… so obviously we’re not doing a day — we’re running a full birthday WEEK for the one-eyed king 👑🖤

This dog wasn’t even supposed to make it to Christmas… and now he’s out here hitting 12 like an absolute menace with depth perception set to “optional.” Cancer took an eye, not his attitude.

Yeah, he’s slower now. Yeah, he’s got a little less gas in the tank… but every single second we get with him still feels like a win. The quiet moments, the “naughty” ones, the “don’t worry I’ve still got it” trots… we’re soaking up all of it.

So give me your best ideas — how are we celebrating a legend this week?
Keep it fair for an old man… but don’t disrespect him with boring 💀
