*New Intake!*

Each summer we seem to have a theme when it comes to our kittens. We don’t seek these out, they just happen to us. Our first year was year of the tortie, our second year was year of the eye enucleations, our third year was the hardest as we had so many extreme medical cases. This summer is proving to be year of the leg malformation.

In memory of Pretzel and Derby, two kittens who we tried our best to save, both born with leg deformities, we introduce you to this sweet little boy, born with a half a leg on one side and a quarter of a leg on the other. We took in his brother as well. He gets around surprisingly well considering and we have the best foster home lined up for him. We will update shortly!

We want to remind you that we are still technically on an intake hiatus, but we opened our arms to these two boys due to the circumstances.

Our vet bill is still very large. If you would like to donate to these babies you may do so at www.derbycitykitties.com

A few weeks ago, you may recall that we rescued a single kitten in need. He had the cutest little face. This poor baby kitten was paralyzed in its back legs. Of course, we feared the worst, but since he was so full of energy and life, we decided to give him a chance. He had a wonderful 24 hours in our care, but after x-rays showed the worst case of scoliosis, and it was discovered that he leaked urine, we made a very hard decision to not let him suffer any longer.

This is never an easy decision. When it comes to rescue, you want to know that you did all You could without compromise. There’s a certain point when you learn that sometimes in Rescue we are selfish and we prolong the inevitable. 5 veterinarians advised that humane euthanasia was the most compassionate decision we could make, so we decided to say a very hard goodbye.

RIP Derby kitten. We loved you so much.

Meet our newest intake: Baby Kitten

You may have noticed our absence lately. That is because we are needing to focus on making our intake number smaller, and finding homes for all of our long-term cats and kittens in our foster care. We know it is kitten season and the kitties need us, but this is a necessity for the rescue. We do hope it is only temporary.

With that being said, please welcome one of the first kittens we offered to take in. Although totally adorable, kitten is suffering paralysis in both of its back legs. We don’t know his prognosis yet, and he will be seen by a vet soon. He was born in a barn, and we don’t really know much else about him. He will need x-rays to determine our next steps, and monitoring control of his bowels. This is a very difficulty situation as he is only about 2 weeks old.

We said yes to this kitten in honor of a baby kitten with back leg paralysis we took in that we had to say goodbye to.

Special delivery! Calliope is still looking for her forever home. She is ready to pack up and be delivered to you!

Calliope is a sweet little girl. She’s a tiny cat with big cuddle capabilities! She loves to sleep in your arms and hang out in your lap on the couch. Like a true calico girl, she sometimes displays her sassy side if she feels she isn’t getting enough pets! She came to us when she was surrendered for having a urinary tract infection, though she currently has no urinary issues.

Calliope is a full grown kitty at about 3 years old. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. We know she gets along with other cats. We are unsure about dogs.

Her adoption fee is $45 with an approved application. Though her foster parents have been absolutely wonderful, we would really love to find this girl the forever home she deserves! If you are interested in adoption, please email us at [email protected]

*ADOPTED!!!!!!*
*Frito- 7-10 years old, Man of many cuddles, FIV+, diabetic. NOT ONE INQUIRY TO ADOPT 😫*

If you’re still on the fence about adopting Frito, or maybe you’re wondering what it might be like to have to hold a cat like an infant/koala bear, we want you to just take a look at these pictures.

We are so grateful to the staff at Dixie Animal Hospital whom indulges in Frito’s needs of being cuddled and caressed. In fact, you don’t hold him, HE HOLDS YOU. AND MAKES BISCUITS AND PURRS. Look at his arm around Tabby, the amazing surgery technician. She makes it a point to give him cuddles whenever she can!

Frito is doing well on his insulin. We really can’t wait until he finds his forever home. We wish we could hire someone just to forever hold Frito. Please share with your friends and family. Let them know that a diabetic cat does not take much time, money, or resources to treat, and that Frito makes up for it by showering you with all the love. He’s lazy, and just wants to relax. He LOVES kids, doesn’t mind other cats and is cool with low-key dogs.
Please email [email protected] if you are interested in adopting or fostering Frito!

*Update- Frito (FIV+)* Available for adoption! Please share and help us find his forever family!

We won’t stop until big boy Frito finds a home! His stitches are out and medically, there is no reason for him to still be at the hospital. He is now only there because no one has stepped up for him 😭. Frito came to us as a stray and needed a surgery to correct his eyelids that were turning inward and irritating his eyes. He’s all healed up, and look! He has eyeballs and he is so handsome!

The good news is that Frito went on an overnight field trip and we learned more about his behavior in a home. What we learned is that he is a real good boy! He used his litter box perfectly and he LOVES KIDS. We are pretty sure he is okay with other cats. We’re also pretty sure he does not like dogs, but he might do okay with a low key one. We would have to see.

Requirements to adopt Frito include having some arm strength since he likes to be carried around like a big baby. Must be able to give cheek scratches for lengthy periods of time as well as have plenty of warm things to sleep on since he’s now a retired street cat. He might tell you stories of what it was like out there, or he might just nap. His future forever person must have an understanding of FIV and that cats with FIV can live wonderfully long, healthy lives with a good diet and vet care, and that he can be around other cats without transferring FIV to them as long as all parties get along. FIV is species specific. He currently requires no extra medical care!

Frito is an older guy at about 7-10 years old. Though he acts like an inside cat, it’s very possible he has been living outside all this time. You can tell he’s not about that life anymore. Don’t be fooled by his perpetually round sad face. He’s one happy boy. If you’re looking for a great companion, he’s for sure the one!

If you’re interested in meeting, fostering, or adopting Frito, please fill out an application on our website at derbycitykitties.com!

*Update-Frito, recovering from surgery* (FIV+)

We wanted to give you all an update on our favorite old man, Frito. We went to the hospital where he is boarding, loved on him, carried him around in our arms as he made big pawed biscuits, and super sweet purrs. We wanted to show you his bright green stitches and just how well he was healing. We snatched a few photos and went on our way.

FAIL!!! 🤣😂🤣

We shall return with better pictures 😒

*Izzy-Urgent need for Foster or Forever home by this week or Izzy will have to go to boarding!*

Izzy is first up on our list of kitty’s that not only need, but deserve to find their forever homes! She is our longest standing foster, but there is no reason for it; Izzy is perfect👌🏽!

We have had Izzy for quite a while, and it seemed like she was happy in her foster home, but her foster parent are moving and she needs a new place to go. Instead of lots of big changes for Izzy, we would love for her to find her forever home instead of being placed in another foster.

Izzy is about 2-3 years old. She is a great lap kitty and is looking for that special someone to be her snuggle buddy. She also likes to chill with other cats and does well with low energy dogs. She really likes her foster puppy sister, and we are bummed to have to separate them, but we know she will enjoy another buddy if given the chance.

Please, please share Izzy. It would be so amazing to finally find her forever home. She so deserves it! Her adoption fee is $45 with an approved application. She is spayed and UTD on vaccinations. You can fill out an adoption application at derbycitykitties.com!

*Update- Frito(FIV+) Having eye surgery today! Donations needed!

In a perfect world, the people whom already adore Frito would have a space for him to call his forever home. Though we really wish we could scoop him up and cal him ours, we are all bursting at the seams. What he needs is to find his person, and after his surgery today, he will be on his way to being a good inside boy!

Frito was found as a stray about 2 weeks ago. Right away, we noticed how plump he was, but he was suffering from mouth ulcers, as well as irritation and swelling around his eyes. It seemed as if Frito has lived the outside life for quite a while, but sought help when he wasn’t feeling well. It’s a good thing he picked a wonderful lady named Kathy to be the one to help him out, and then shortly after, we totally fell for him and took him in to our program.

Frito now needs an entropion surgery. An entropion is when the eyelids (typically lower lids) are folding inwards, causing irritation in the eyeball. It’s no wonder Frito looks pitiful.

We are really wanting to get Frito out of boarding. He seems to be doing well there and is not stressed by other cats or dogs at all, but 2 weeks is long enough in a cage. It’s time to get him in what might be his first real home! Frito’s likes are simple: food, blanket, bed, warmth, neck scratches, purrs. He makes an excellent little spoon. He’s like a cat-version of a body pillow! He will keep you so warm! The vet staff even told us they caught him on his back with his belly up, soaking in the warm space heater. If you’re looking for a totally chill cat, Frito is it! He requires no extra care after his eyes heal. We estimate him to be about 7-10 years old. Please keep him in your thoughts today! We know he’s in great hands!

Donations are very much needed to help care for Frito. If you would like to donate to Frito’s surgery, you can do so at our website: www.derbycitykitties.com!

*Happy Adoption Story & Update on Forest-Kitten with Kidney Failure* Thank you to all who donated to her ultrasound!!

What can we say about our Forest other than there will never be another kitten like her. We like to joke and call her our “$1,000 kitten”, because she has totally drained our funds. When Forest came to us, it was a constant emotional roller coaster. We sent out multiple cultures on her urine when we noticed just how much water she was drinking, and how diluted it her urine was. Over and over we got answers we didn’t want to see. Little by little her kidneys were getting worse despite treatment. And then we were told that our tiny little 3 month old kitten was in kidney failure. It crushed us. But because of your generosity, we were able to have Forest seen by Dr. Cummings at Blue Pearl who performed an ultrasound on her. He seemed to think her kidney issues were not congenital and he made a plan for her to be on long term antibiotics.

8 weeks of antibiotics went by, and during that time Forest went to her new foster home with Ashlea and her daughter, Maggie. Halfway through her antibiotic treatment, we retested her kidneys again to see where we were at- results came back that kidneys were worsening. Damn, crushed again. But we didn’t give up! We knew that even with kidney disease, Forest could still possibly live a long, healthy life. And it didn’t matter to Ashlea and Maggie what her timeline looked like. We were told Forest was home for good no matter her final diagnosis 💕

When the 8 weeks were up, our nerves were shot. Waiting for those test results was torture. Forest deserved better. She was the most perfect kitten; cuddly, and confident. A friend to everyone.

We got a call from Dr. Cook that results were in. Her test had come back WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS! We immediately texted her forever family to let them know of the good news, and yes, we cried a lot!

So much is in store for this little lady and her family. We don’t know what the next step is. Most likely more monitoring and testing here and there to make sure her levels stay within normal range, but for now we are taking a big breath of relief for Forest and all that she has had to endure. We vowed to never give up on her and this wouldn’t be possible at all without the community’s generous support! We thank you all for loving this fluff kitty as much as we do!

🎉YOU’RE HOME, FOREST! 🎉

Winnie- Available for adoption!

❄️Winnie heard it might start snowing again, so she got out her pretty pink sweater and put it on for all to see just how warm, cozy, and current she can be. But what’s the point if no one is looking to add her to their forever home? Who is she trying to impress? Surely, not her foster family, who already knows just what a total catch she is. Maybe she will keep it on just in case she catches someone’s eye....❄️

Winnie is an amazing kitten. She has been through so much and is such a little fighter. She was found on a busy road, dragging her back legs. Her first vet visit was heartbreaking as we learned she had a crushed pelvis and a broken femur, but we didn’t give up on this tiny kitten. She made it through a tough surgery to insert a rod in her leg, and more than 8 weeks of cage rest. But now she is all patched up and ready for her forever home!

Winnie gets along with other cats perfectly. She is a sweet, cuddly cat with humans, but she also likes her own space sometimes. Sometimes she startles easily, so we are recommending a home without small children. We think older children would be fine. She has never met a dog, so we would have to carefully consider a home with low-energy dogs.

Winnie can’t wait to officially be apart of a forever family to help keep warm during the rest of the winter. If you are interested in adopting Winnie, you can fill out an application at www.derbycitykitties.com!

*Frito Update!*- Foster home needed! (FIV+)

Frito has been hanging out at the vet, and we have been getting to know him more and more. Verdict is that he is just a big ol’ sensitive cuddle puff. Don’t tell him we called him that because he needs to keep his street cred. It’s time for him to retire the outside life and finally be a good inside boy. His discharge and swelling in his eyes may look worse, but we have started him on some eye medication. Unfortunately, the vet thinks he is suffering from Entropion, which is the folding inward of the lower eyelids, which causes his hair and eyelashes to irritate and scratch the eye. We are hoping the medications will prove us wrong, but it is very likely that he will need surgery to correct this, which we will provide all medical costs for.

Frito needs to be on the eye medication for another 12 more days, and we would love to find someone confident enough to take in his special needs boy. He will need eye drops put in twice a day, but other than that, he doesn’t need any other special care. He is FIV+ though, which means he CAN be in a household with other cats as long as all parties get along. Frito seems to not have a care in the world about other pets, so we know he’s good on his end. He just wants a warm home. He is a big baby who loves to give head butts and purr. All he wants is some head, neck, and cheek scratches (and he has the best cheeks in the world!).

We think Frito is about 7-10 years old, and we think he’s been out on the streets for a very long time. Amazingly, he uses his litter box perfectly and does not spray. He has been neutered and fully vaccinated. Can you provide this awesome guy with a great home to retire in, or just a place to crash until his perfect home is found? If so, please fill out a foster application on our website www.derbycitykitties.com!
