Sunny Day Dog Training, LLC I’m Cassie Kiser, I’m a certified dog trainer, certified therapy dog handler, working-mom of a toddler. It’s hard work!

I know what it’s like to run around, trying to balance your job, with the house, with the dog, with the kid.

I get asked a lot about how to teach kids how to interact with their dog. Our son is almost three and is very fast. But here is what we try:
-Avoid rough play with dog in front of toddler (toddler will try it too!)
-Sit with our toddler when he wants to pet our dog (this helps comfort our dog too.)
-If our son starts to get too rough, we try to calmly correct our son. If we were to yell or panic, it could startle the dog and our child.
-We watch our dog’s body language very closely and break up the situation if our dog needs. Our dog’s ears typically go back first, she will also yawn, show white in her eyes, and overall look at us like, “help me!”

I think it’s more important to consider your lifestyle, breed traits, and consider the individual dog. If you can provide proper outlets for a dog, such as an Aussie, then it’s less likely to have behavior issues. My family has an Aussie with no anxiety. She has a farm to freely run on.. and we offer plenty of enrichment when she’s at home in the city. She played “volleyball” last night while we were watching the Bengals game by hitting a beach ball with her nose. I don’t think it’s fair to breeds to offer such generalizations without context.

ONCE you’ve made the decision to get a dog, you’re then faced with arguably the trickiest part of the process – what breed to go for. With hundreds to choose from, it’s impo…

So true!! 8-12 weeks is the prime time to get puppies out there and experience the world.

🐶 So true! It is sooooo important to expose your puppy to LOTS of stimuli.
🐩 However, without the help of a professional, you could accidentally over expose and cause an aversion to a certain stimuli. That can be difficult to undo as the dog matures.

“When our walks with our Great Pyrenees puppy started to be full of frustration and stress, we knew we needed to find a great trainer with the patience, expertise and skills to help us build confidence to manage our 60 lb puppy!! Over the last 4 weeks, we have completed one on one level 1 puppy training sessions with Cassie. Aside from walking on a leash, Cassie has really helped us understand our dogs behaviors and strategized with us to address her jumping up on humans. Our dog Luna is 10 months old and we were having trouble getting her to walk on a leash which caused dreaded and stressful walks.

Cassie took the time to meet with us to assess our dog Luna and to really listen to OUR goals for the training. After just 4 weeks, she walks like a well trained puppy. Cassie set us up with realistic expectations from the start and empowered us to introduce basic commands like “look” to establish eye contact; leave it/take it; come and stay. Cassie has made training fun for our whole family. We really appreciate the time she sets up week to week to problem solve behaviors as they arise! This type of supportive environment brought tons of success to changing our dog’s behaviors and never once stressed our dog or our family out! We loved our training sessions with Cassie and have now signed up for Level 2 training with her! We are lucky to have found Cassie as our trainer! She is truly a PRO.”— Anne
