Meet Pippi.
Just a few days ago, this sweet girl was found on a sidewalk in Old Louisville — soaked, struggling, and so still that the kind gentleman who found her wasn’t even sure she was alive.
But he didn’t walk away.
He cleaned her up, realized her wing was injured, and started searching for help. Somehow, we stumbled across his post, and we knew this pigeon deserved more than being dismissed, ignored, or left with no chance.
At the time, he was calling her “Pig.”
Now, she is Pippi.
We brought her home, gave her a safe place to rest, and today she is at the vet having her wing properly splinted. They believe it may be more of a tendon or ligament injury than a break, and there is a strong chance she may never fly again.
And that’s okay.
Because “can’t fly” does not mean “can’t live.”
Not here.
If Pippi’s life is meant to be lived on the ground, then we will make sure she has the safest, happiest, most loved ground-pigeon life possible. Once she is healed and ready, she may even become a companion for Francine.
The heartbreaking part is that just one day before she came to us, the man who saved her tried calling the same vet office seeing her today. One staff member reportedly told him they couldn’t see her because a wild pigeon was “vermin,” and that with an injured wing, euthanasia would likely be the only option because she couldn’t have a good life.
Newsflash: we do things differently here.
Pippi is not vermin.
She is not disposable.
She is not less worthy because she is a pigeon.
And she is not less deserving because her life may look different.
Even the vet team today commented on how incredibly docile and sweet she is. We can’t stop thinking about how close this gentle girl came to her story ending on a wet sidewalk, cold and alone.
But someone chose compassion.
So welcome to Butterfly Valley, Pippi.
You are safe now.
You are seen now.
And your story is just beginning. 🩶
