-- Adopting a friend --

Please call the shelter if you are interested in adopting any of the pets. Although we try our best to update this page, we cannot guarantee that the information here is up-to-date. Please note that the shelter is unable to 'hold' animals. Stray animals taken to the shelter are held for three business days to allow the owner to reclaim the pet. If they are not reclaimed they are available for adoption. Owner surrendered pets typically are available for adoption or rescue immediately. The temporary adoption fee per the Director is a non refundable $65.00 for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. The adoption fee covers the surgical sterilization, a one year rabies vaccination and a booster vaccination. If the pet is already spayed/neutered, the adoption fee is only $15

The official county website is www.co.valencia.nm.us

If you want to view animals in the facility go to the “department” tab and then “animal control” and “animals in the facility”

This facility does NOT have a foster program. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please contact a rescue nearby. All of our valued Rescues are in need of dedicated foster homes.

‼️The USDA has confirmed the first case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

New World screwworm is a serious threat to livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. Unlike common maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on living tissue, causing painful wounds that can rapidly worsen if not treated promptly.

PLEASE inspect your animals daily for:🔹 Draining or enlarging wounds🔹 Maggots or egg masses🔹 Signs of discomfort or irritability🔹 Lesions around the ears, nose, ge***al area, or umbilicus

Early detection is critical. If you suspect your pet may be affected, contact Animal Hospital of Los Lunas immediately at 505-866-1852.

Please share this information to help protect pets and livestock throughout New Mexico.

These are four of the senior dogs currently at Valencia County Animal Shelter who are in urgent need of adopters, fosters, or rescue placement.

Coco, Babe, Otis, and Yogi deserve the chance to spend their days in a loving home rather than a shelter kennel. Senior dogs are often overlooked, but they have so much love left to give.

Please note that Babe is blind and is available to rescue organizations only.

Valencia County Animal Shelter will be open tomorrow, June 9, at 9:00 AM. If you have been considering adding a companion to your family, fostering, or helping through a rescue, now is the time.

If you are interested in meeting any of these deserving senior pups, please call Valencia County Animal Shelter at (505) 866-2479 or stop by the shelter during business hours.

Please share to help these sweet seniors find the second chance they have been waiting for. ❤️
