✨ Please join us in welcoming our newest Veterinary Ophthalmologist, Dr. Taylor Opgenorth, DVM, DACVO! ✨

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Opgenorth to the MASH family! She earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Wisconsin. She then completed a Small Animal Surgery and Medicine Internship at the University of Florida, followed by an Ophthalmology Internship in St. Louis. Dr. Opgenorth returned to the University of Wisconsin to complete her Comparative Ophthalmology Residency and became a board-certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist in 2024.

Dr. Opgenorth has contributed to several areas of ophthalmic research, including pain management following ophthalmic surgery, and has a special interest in eyelid and corneal reconstruction. She values collaboration with both clients and referring veterinarians to provide exceptional patient care.

📅 Dr. Opgenorth will begin seeing patients on August 4th and will continue our Ophthalmology service hours:
Monday–Thursday | 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

As many of you know, Dr. Tara Stonex will be starting her maternity leave next week and plans to return in January 2027. During her leave, Dr. Opgenorth will be caring for Dr. Stonex’s patients and seeing all new ophthalmology consultations to ensure continuity of care for our clients and patients.

When Dr. Stonex returns in January 2027, we are excited to become a two-ophthalmologist service, allowing us to provide even greater access to specialized eye care.

Here are some of the patients Dr. Tara Stonex screened in May as part of the ACVO-SAVES program! This program offers complimentary eye exams for service and working animals. Board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists volunteer their services to perform these screenings for service and working animals. This program takes place every May, and registration is open from April 1st through the 30th each year. For more information, please visit: https://acvo-saves.org/ . Losing a beloved companion animal is an absolutely devastating and heartbreaking experience. They were more than a pet; they are our family. The loss is significant, and it’s one that should be honored 💐

Our Veterinary Social Work Team would like to lend a hand in ceremonially honoring your beloved companion animal(s). Similar to what human hospice agencies do, we will use the virtual space to hold a Candle Lighting Vigil on Tuesday, June 30th at 6p 🕯️

The goal is for participants to obtain validation & normalization of the grief experience & to provide a ceremonial step on the road to healing. Candle lighting vigils can help give us a sense of hope & light when our grief feels like an overwhelming darkness. Memorialization, and ceremonies such as these, can help us honor who & what we have lost—can help us process our terrible loss and start to heal 🤍

This free virtual event is open to the entire community, so feel free to share it and invite your friends & family to join.

Last week, we celebrated a very special milestone for our patient Shamrock McAllister 🐾💛

After completing his chemotherapy for a**l sac adenocarcinoma, Shamrock gifted his family the ultimate prize — his very own “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” 🍀🌈

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Strength, love, and resilience all in one little fighter.
