Shaggy in his travel cage to get his sub Q fluids again today. Checking his bloodwork again this week to see if he was just dehydrated last week or if he has kidney disease.

Hiya! I am working on inventory for my business this week. I have found a lot of items that I’m not interested to include in my permanent toy line, therefore will be selling to you guys as one-off items.

I know it will include one-off parrot enrichment toys to varying prices for varied sized birds.

I will be posting them on my website once completed, as well as here. It would be first come first serve for these items.

Keep an eye out, it will be coming soon!!

3 out of 4 of Rudi’s disease tests have come back! those are all negative! we are waiting on the one last one to come back from the lab. hopefully won’t be too long.
he’s a very good boy at the moment. he’s very very interested in recall. he was learnt he can fly through doors to get to me which was cool. once his tests come back fully we’ll do more desensitisation work for free flight training.
he has definitely bonded to me and isn’t too impressed when family get a bit too close. Amazon things 😆 so far everything is going very smoothly

Cheap and easy foraging. Handful of plastic straws, wrap in zip tie and pull. I put another zip tie in with the straws before pulling so I can hang them. You can stuff almond slivers in the straws for foraging.

Why doesn’t your bird like going back into its cage?

This is not only a behavioral problem that can lead to increased aggression, but it’s a husbandry behavior more. A bird should enjoy their cage and be willing to go back every single time.

When I hear clients talk about this, and I hear it a lot, the first thing I think is there is something that is tipping the balance from our and in cage time that needs to be addressed.

It’s a verity of factors. Is the cage big enough? Is there enough enrichment and mental stimulation THAT THE BIRD ACTUALLY USES!!! This is so important. The bird actively engages, chews, destroys, and forages. If they are not interacting, it’s simply a cage decoration and not functional. I have an enrichment and foraging webinar on my website that goes into detail about how to train your bird to interact with enrichment and how to forage.

Other thoughts are are they out enough? Are they out TOO much (yes, there is a too much in some cases). Do you unintentionally reward them not going back?

Once the behavior becomes a pattern, you’ll need structured training to start new behaviors and patterns that are more desirable. Feel free to comment or message me if you’re having troubles with getting your bird back into its cage :)

Cages aren’t bad. When they’re set up appropriately and used effectively, they are a necessity to keeping your bird safe when you aren’t around in an unnatural environment full of dangers and toxins.

What does behavior success look like for birds?

Well, it depends on the bird and the caretakers goals. I really like to focus on equipping the birds with the skills needed to better adapt with captive life. They didn’t ask to be here, so let’s give them the tools in order to feel safe in their environment, trust their handlers, decrease stress and anxieties, increase choice, and get educated to do best for them.

For Crazy Bird, my goal for him was to not feel the need to aggress and safe and reliable transportation. That was it. I kept it extremely broad with him because he had such severe behaviors that I had to work through.

So you think two goals, two behaviors to learn. Think again. There were a wide range of behaviors taught to CB:
Station training, target training, desensitizing my distance to his cage, towel desensitization, step up on the towel, take food out of my hand all in the cage… then retrain it for out of the cage because both environments were showing extreme behavior, of course starting behind protective contact in the cage then outside when he had more skills developed.

He has reached his initial behavioral goals. But, there are always new goals we can set for him. Behavior can always be modified and built up through progression. I’m not done with CB, I really want to push our training to see how much behavior I can undo after 35ish years of rehearsing. He can now do well in captive care, but I want to help him thrive!
