It’s been not only hot in Southern California but the humidity for us has been off the charts! I see a tiny reprieve next week. Fingers crossed for cooler weather so we can get back to dahlias. They slowed down completely to save energy just to stay alive but after some shade cloth, a nice feeding and deep watering we should have another full fall flush to us into 2027. I was harvesting dahlias and ranunculus last January! How insane is that! Bring on the cooler temps!

Start an urban flower farm side hustle.

Back story, seven years ago I started a garden and six years ago I removed my front lawn. I was in charge of lawn care and I absolutely despised it so one day while my partner was gone at work I removed a 1/4 of it and replaced it with a perennial garden. Fast forward to 2021 when everyone was learning how to grow their own food at home and I decided that a quarter wasn’t going to cut it so I removed the rest against everyone everyone’s better judgment.

Now I grow food, flowers, and herbs organically. I’m providing a mini ecosystem in the middle of suburban Los Angeles County for pollinators, birds, lizards , beneficial insects and whatever other wildlife find my space and decide to call it home.

A few few people started asking for bouquets from my garden and it evolved into an organic urban flower farm providing locally grown blooms in my community and beyond. If you can dream it do it garden homies.

So not only does the bronze leaf fennel become a host plant for tons and tons of ladybug larva but it’s also a host plant for swallowtail butterflies I believe this is a black anise swallowtail butterfly.

We had tons and tons of caterpillars all over the fennel and I would constantly find empty chrysalises. I finally caught this one drying this morning and by the time I went back to take more photos just five minutes later it had already flown away.

We just closed one big chapter in our lives and started a new one and I believe this was another sign that we are doing the right thing. Because my little girl deserves turn into the beautiful butterfly that she is whether that be on the dance floor or on the field!

Neem = Nope

The most common question we get is how we protect our blooms from pests, and the honest answer is that we let nature take the lead.

True pest management stems from healthy plants and living soil, backed by a thriving population of predatory insects.

You will never find us using neem oil. Despite the widespread belief that it is entirely safe for beneficial insects, the reality tells a different story. The standard advice to spray during off-hours only protects insects that return to a hive. It completely fails to protect the solitary, native pollinators that sleep tucked away in the foliage. Neem oil works by dehydrating insects. Spraying a garden means coating these resting creatures in a compound that slowly dries them out.

Our garden remains a true sanctuary, free from synthetic and organic sprays alike

I started off this year only purchasing five tubers. I told myself I wasn’t going to buy a ton and get overwhelmed and end up losing half of them.

As usual I didn’t listen to myself and I purchased 180 and then I was gifted about 80 more.

I purchased four KA Dahlia’s this year at $35 per tuber and to me that was more money than I wanted to spend especially on one tuber.

I ended up grabbing

KA DESERT ROSE
KA MOCHA KATIE

Then my friend Sharon In Bloom gifted me with another guava and so many more insane varieties. From KA, to RM, to Coseytown, to Sandia, to Levi’s, to Lee’s (which her pink grapefruit won best of show last week at the OC fair)she also gifted me DL the special but sadly that one and KA whisper didn’t make it while we were out of town at a dance competition for Rylee.

Excited to share all the fun varieties from now until Dec since we don’t have a frost here. Happy Growing!
