At Lorena Veterinary Center, we want every pet in our community to stay safe and healthy this season.

If it's too hot to hold โ it's too hot for paws. On an 85ยฐF Texas day, asphalt can reach 140ยฐF and can burn paw pads in under 60 seconds. Walk in the early morning or after sunset whenever possible.

Always Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from heat and sun, and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Never assume a partially filled bowl from this morning is enough โ refill it often.

Watch for excessive panting, heavy drooling, confusion or disorientation, glazed eyes, unsteady movement, red gums, or a deep red tongue. If you see these signs, act immediately โ every minute matters:
Stop all exercise or movement. Remove your pet from hot vehicles or buildings and get them into shade immediately.
Pour cool water over their body, focusing on the neck, stomach, and thighs โ avoid the head. Submerge their body in cool water if available (such as a paddling pool or stream). Create a breeze by fanning them.
Once cooled, transport them in a well-ventilated, air-conditioned vehicle. Call ahead to alert the clinic. Remember: cool first, transport second.
