I don’t do 🐴👟 often as I try to keep my clients barefoot if at all possible. Sometimes horses need shoes for pathology reasons or to keep up as performance horses. I’m an EasyCare Fan and so that’s what I use. I’ve found that some models absorb dye super well while others are more muted tones. For this horse today, this is his second cycle after a lifetime in metal shoes so the angles are still a bit funky. We pulled his hind shoes and so far he’s responding well. I’m always happy to bring new technology of composite glue-ons to my horses. I’m even happier to have colorful pretty shoes!

I hate to break it to you…. But your donkey actually needs their feet trimmed on a schedule. This sweet girl has been on a scheduale every 6 weeks with me for the past 2 years. I get calls almost daily from owners needing their donkeys feet done, but they are feral. For my safety I need the donkeys I trim to be tame meaning: able to be haltered and able to pick up all 4 feet without trying to kick your head off. If they can’t do those things, I’m just not the right farrier for them. I’m also not the right farrier if you only want thier feet done 2-3 times a year. Let’s do better for our long eared friends! 🫏🫏🫏

Being 13 days old is tough work! Training for trimming has already started for this handsome c**t. Mom is an A+ example for him to learn from when it comes to standing perfect for the farrier. It’s always exciting working on foals and seeing how proper farrier care at a young age sets them up for a long life with healthy hooves!

TW: animal death/animal dissection:

I want to give a huge thank you to Cristina Brogdon for hosting a dissection clinic where we had the opportunity to do a full horse dissection. While it can be hard to seperate our love for an animal with the task of dissection, the opportunities to learn are invaluable. We were able to learn not only from the legs and hoof, but also the whole horse. It was a great weekend for the Southwest PHCP Group. Continuing education is so important as a hoof care practitioner. This opportunity is one I am forever thankful for, and thankful to the owner of Allie who allowed us to learn from her passing due to colic.

Fly control has been a topic of discussion at every single one of my stops the past few weeks. So here is what has worked for me the past 2 years. If nothing else, the fly spray recipe will save you quite a few dollars as commercial fly spray is expensive!

First, we do feed thru fly control to kill flies in the p**p before they can be a bother. This is the one we use: https://a.co/d/7E3dWPP

Second, this is my fly spray recipe. Last time I did the calculation its $3.77 per 32oz bottle (and you can use a much better spray bottle of your choice!)

- 1.5 TB Permectrin II
- 1 TB Dish Soap
- 1/2 C Baby Oil
- 1 C White Vinegar

Put all ingredients in a 32oz spray bottle and fill it the rest of the way with water then give it a good shake.

I also like to put Citronella in sometimes when I have it.

We go through 1-2 bottles a week in the summer but we still have the same bottle of Permectrin II I bought last year so it lasts a while and is the same ingredient used in many store bought fly sprays that are just getting more and more expensive.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Credit for the post and mixing the spray for me goes to Rhi Thompson! 🤍

Happy Friday! It’s almost the weekend!

Perhaps one of my favorite things about this job is meeting all kind of cool and cute “bonus” animals at my client stops! Here are a whole bunch of recent cuties I took pics of the last few months. Also a bonus cutie, Echo (horse), who is a very curious girl. 🐴

Also those kittens are currently looking for a new home 👀

Being the farrier’s horse means you’re expected to stand pretty dang good. Out of my 5 horses, Breeze is the best! It was farrier day at Weathermark Ranch last Saturday. Have to make sure the horses at home are in tip top shape! Nothing worse than a farrier’s horses having bad feet. Worst part was no one paid me at the end of 5 trims! 😅

A good hoofcare practitioner is going to care about how the hoof looks right after the trim, and what it looks like at the end of the trim cycle.

I had a prospective client recently who mentioned that they were interested in seeing a hoof that I had been trimming for awhile. This was an excellent request and a good push to make sure I start posting hooves that have been in my care for an extended period of time. These particular feet have been under my care for 2 years. They are on a consistent 6 week schedule and thier owners have the nutrition dialed in for each horse. It’s important to me that you can pick up a hoof at 6 weeks and it still be structurally sound.

The foot I picked up vs. the foot I put down. Donkey edition 🫏 featuring a little more sole/frog cleaning to remove thrushy areas. This “cleans” up the bottom of the hoof a bit more in preparation for thrush treatment.
