Happy Halloween from Smiling Hogshead Ranch! This pumpkin grew right out of our compost and earned a seat at the potluck table! Now that’s a volunteer with some Halloween spirit!

The pollinators were a little bigger than usual at the Ranch today! Today’s Bee the Solution Halloween edition brought out people dressed in bee stripes, butterfly wings, an entire moth ensemble, and plenty of whimsy to Smiling Hogshead Ranch! What a beautiful afternoon to gather, learn about our pollinator neighbors, share some honey, and enjoy the garden together. The real bees and other pollinators made an appearance visiting flowers while we celebrated them, photographed them, and uploaded their pictures to iNaturalist site. Thank you to The Bee Conservancy and everyone who joined us and helped make today so much fun. A little Halloween spirit, a little honey, and a whole lot of community made today extra special at the Ranch.

We invite you to join The Bee Conservancy and Smiling Hogshead Ranch for an adventure in community science. During this hands-on event, we will focus on photographing bees and other pollinators visiting flowering plants and upload them to global database iNaturalist.org.

Jennifer Palmer, our Director of Horticulture, will discuss the goals behind our “Bee the Solution” community science program and give an overview of some of the many bee species we might see at this wonderful community garden.

You will get tips on how to capture clear, strategic images of bees and other pollinators as we explore this lovely Long Island City greenspace. We’ll then edit and upload our images to iNaturalist and discuss what we saw!

We will be outdoors for much of this event, so please dress for comfort and suitably for the weather. We recommend hats, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and bringing a refillable water bottle as well as a fully charged smartphone or camera.

Getting our hands dirty at Smiling Hogshead Ranch! Breaking up food scraps, tending the compost, and taking a closer look at what comes through, including these prickly chestnut husks. There’s always something to learn when we work together. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help turn scraps into nourishment for the garden yesterday.

What a wonderful way to spend a Friday afternoon! We gathered weeds and turned our compost, and donated some gardening supplies to students who are starting their own school garden in Flushing. Happy Friday from the Ranch!
