This is Lea and I fabricated her a custom partial limb prosthesis.
Lea is 4 y/o and a rescue. Being a rescue, her background information is limited but her parents knew she was congenitally missing a portion of her lower limb. Although she's fast without it, her parents wanted to take preventative measures to keep her strong.
They've cared and are knowledgeable about golden retrievers such as their high chance of developing osteoarthritis. While fast, they notice Lea is starting to display some compensatory gait and starting to slow down just slightly. Her natural gait is to lift up her leg and then tap it every few steps.
At SoCal Pet Brace, transparency is important and whenever I receive a call for a partial foot prosthesis we discuss the pros and cons. For most dogs that are congenitally missing a limb, it's a 50/50 chance that they accept it, and it depends on several factors.
With consistency, patience, and encouragement there are benefits that are worth it. If pet parents are willing to take the chance then we are here to support along the way!
Benefits/ goals for Lea:
-provide better balance reducing compensatory gait that can put strain overtime on her limbs
-reduce risk of injury from overcompensation
-reduce fatigue
-more comfort with each step
