We’ve been very busy and forget to get pictures with hay and the horses getting worked and doing lessons. I just haven’t posted any pictures.

🐎 The Byerley Turk: The War Horse Who Shaped Racing History

Before the modern Thoroughbred became the star of racecourses around the world, there was the Byerley Turk — a dark brown or black stallion born around 1680 and remembered as one of the three foundation sires of the modern Thoroughbred, alongside the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian. 🏇

Legend surrounds his early life. Some accounts suggest he may have been captured during conflicts in Europe, while others say his exact origin remains uncertain. What is clearer is that he became the war horse of Captain Robert Byerley, serving in Ireland during King William’s wars and at the Battle of the Boyne. ⚔️ His speed reportedly helped save his rider from capture — a dramatic beginning for a horse whose bloodline would echo through centuries.

After military service, the Byerley Turk retired to stud in Yorkshire, eventually standing at Goldsborough Hall. Though he did not sire a huge number of foals, his influence was immense. His descendants included Jigg, Partner, Tartar, and ultimately Herod, one of the major sire-line founders in Thoroughbred history. 🌳

Today, the Byerley Turk’s direct male Thoroughbred line is rare, but his legacy lives on through racing pedigrees and even other breeds, including the American Quarter Horse, American Saddlebred, and Morgan horse. From battlefield charger to bloodstock legend, the Byerley Turk remains one of the most important horses in equine history. ✨

Sometimes the old tools are the best tools. This handmade curry was my grandfather’s and probably my great grandfather’s too. Made fast work of the mounds of hair coming off Mr. Pat. Filled the trash can and that’s pushed down to put more in 😳
