Ending on a good note, not a perfect note will bring you a better horse tomorrow. One of the most important things Iโ€™ve learned riding colts and training horses is to not take that small effort as not enough. Small effort turns into big effort as confidence grows. A horse is nothing without confidence in themselves and in you.

One good step today will bring you two good steps tomorrow. Two good steps tomorrow will bring you 3 the following.

GRATITUDE

Appreciating every run and being grateful even when the outcome is not ideal will help you get through the difficult times.

Barrel racing gets tougher every year. If you are only happy when you win 1st place you are likely to have some disappointing times.

Be fair to your horse and their abilities along with your own talent and try before being disappointed in the results.

Some horses are winners and some are all they can be and it may not be enough to win. That doesnโ€™t mean they didnโ€™t give you their heart every trip down the alley.

Thank them for their effort. Make them feel specialโ€”like they are winnersโ€”and you may see the results start to shift.

Something that I believe most barrel racers think is only taught on the pattern at a very specific spot in relation to each barrel. The key to successful rate in a horse is their understanding of your body and seat, and how to respond to that communication. There are several drills I like to do to teach rate and response off of the pattern. Phil Haugen introduced me to this drill, where the horse can still lock onto an object but respond to you. This drill can be worked on both the straightaways and in turns. I love to keep these barrel horses minds fresh and responsive in all situations. Rate is such an important part of speed control in your horse. Try it out!
