I guess you could say farming is in our blood! From as far back as I can remember, my family has farmed. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and dad all farmed livestock, corn, and beans.
I lived for the summers spent at the farm playing on tractors, herding sheep with some of my favorite border collies, and seeing how far out into the bean field my brother & I could go before we couldn’t be seen again. I also helped my grandmother & mom plant flowers each year. Oh the glorious colors of the Snapdragons, Marigolds, & Geraniums! So much fun to get my hands dirty & pretend I could make those Snaps “talk” by pinching them! And flowers were WAY more fun & interesting than corn.
Several years ago I met my husband Broch. He also grew up farming. His parents have a Nursery & Flower Shop in Southern Indiana. Broch grew up playing under plant benches & selling his “crop” of pine cones to whomever would indulge him!
When Broch asked me to marry him, I knew we were on a budget but the most important thing to me to have were the flowers! I wanted them EVERYWHERE! So we picked up our shovels, some seed packets, and tubers & decided to grow our own. Dahlias, Celosia, & Daisies, so many varieties and colors. It was so exciting to watch these little seeds sprout into glorious stems of color. We really didn’t know what we were doing but to our amazement, they grew & grew! They grew so much that we actually had enough to use for our entire wedding and I was so proud to be able to say “We grew these.”. It also brought back many childhood memories of helping on my grandparents farm.
It was at that point that I was hooked & knew THIS is what we want to do-it was meant to be. It was time to get back to our roots. So we packed up our house in the city & bought a small farm in the country.
Fast forward to today. I still love digging in the dirt & live for the days spent on our 4 acre farm with Broch & our 3 sheepdogs, Zagros, Walter, & Willow.
There is still something magical about those first sprouts of flowers and it fills our hearts with unbelievable joy seeing others marveling at our blooms.
We are still young in our journey of flower farming but we invite YOU to come along with us
to share in the laughter and heartache that is farming and to share in the beauty we harvest from our earth.
