My first ever rough green snake! (Opheodrys aestivus) What a beauty! 😍 I spotted it in the road right out my front door being picked on by a mockingbird. He had a couple rough spots on him from the bird, but nothing that appeared outwardly fatal. I moved him to a shaded area at the edge of the treeline to hopefully recover. The next day, he was gone. As always, nature took its course, one way or another.

My first relocation of the season! Yesterday evening, this little rat snake was on the porch of sweet young family who recently moved to Georgia from the UK. It's their first spring here and being unfamiliar with the local wildlife, this little guy gave them quite the fright. After I arrived, I assured them it was a harmless rat snake. They had three young boys excitedly watching through the windows of the house. With the parents permission, I was able to let the boys pet the snake, showing them how it was smelling them with its tongue. They seemed thrilled! Afterwards, I released the snake at the edge of the tree line on their property. Knowing there are copperheads in the area, I suggested to the parents that they familiarize themselves with our local venomous species and always be cautious about toys and other items left in the yard.

Opportunities like this are why I do this. I love getting to educate, calm fears, and (most of all) save these misunderstood creatures.💞

Relocated these guys from a muddy crawl space to a beautiful rock pile with a scenic creek view! 🐍💕

This big girl made my weekend! 😍 She is one of the frequently seen watersnakes at our campground on Lake Sinclair, spotted out enjoying the sun by the lake before the cold weather rolls in. Brown watersnakes (Nerodia taxispilota) are some of my favorite, simply because they're so cute and derpy-looking. 😆 Overall, she appeared very plump and healthy. She had one tiny injury to the very tip of her tail when I found her, but her cloudy eyes indicate she will probably be shedding soon, which is a sign of good health. After a little bit of hook and bucket practice, I let this pretty girl go right back where I found her. 🫶🏼🐍

Found 5 more little timber babies today at the daycare! 🐍 Plus a bonus: a suuuper musky little ring-necked snake! Lol. Still no luck finding momma, though. She is certainly still somewhere nearby, but with the amount of yard debris around where these guys were, it's like looking for a needle in multiple hay stacks. Thank you Stephen J Barfield and Jesse for moving stuff around with that excavator and helping to spot these guys. Definitely never would have found them without y'all!

A handful of beautiful timber rattler babies relocated from near a daycare today! 😍🐍 Momma was MIA. We'll be going back to look for her again tomorrow.🤞🏻

We’re back again with another and this week, we’ll be discussing the dramatic display of the hognose snake 🐍

When hognose snakes feel threatened, they exhibit a unique and theatrical sequence of defensive displays. Typically, the initial response to a potential predator involves intimidation behaviors such as neck flattening, mimicking a cobra hood, accompanied by loud hissing and false striking. If this attempt at intimidation fails, they may try out a different approach at deterring the predator - playing dead. Also known as thanatosis, playing dead is a method that some animals use to appear unappetizing to a potential predator. Hognose snakes are known to flip onto their back, open their mouth, and let their tongue hang out. In some instances, the hognose also regurgitates recent prey, emitting a foul odor that imitates the smell of a decaying animal to further discourage predation.

This remarkable and complex display is a great example of instinctive behavioral adaptations that have evolved in response to predation pressure! Have you been lucky enough to see the hognose display in action?
