His name was Flint, a small chestnut gelding drafted into service in 1944. He wasn’t the biggest horse, nor the fastest. In fact, some soldiers joked he looked like a kid’s pony.
But on the battlefield, size means nothing.
Heart means everything.
Flint carried messages between units when radio lines failed.
He galloped through smoke, fire, mud, and fear.
Once, he was grazed by a bullet on the shoulder — he stumbled but didn’t stop.
Another time, shrapnel tore into his flank.
He bled, but kept running.
Soldiers later said,
“Flint wasn’t running… he was praying with his legs.”
They meant he ran as if someone else needed him more than he needed safety.
After the war, he was brought home, limping but alive. He spent his remaining days in a wide green pasture. He would lift his head whenever planes flew overhead — then relax, realizing this time the sky wasn’t angry.
Heroes don’t always wear medals.
Some wear scars and still choose kindness. 🌿✨

Little Big Man, he might be small and old, but he is a great ride.

Two yearling stud colts. Both are learning to put their noses in the halter and walking with me. First time in the same pasture, I think they like each other. It’s been fun working with them as HA always haltered the young ones. I Miss watching him.
