Hey friends! I wanted to touch on a couple things this morning, and in doing so I'm asking you to also comment on this post as much as you can so others will also see it.

First when I combined my homestead page and goodies page together my fear was always that the goodies posts would never be seen anymore as my homestead posts consistently do better with facebooks algorithm, unfortunately that is exactly what has happened and only about 20 people are seeing my goodies posts that I share almost daily 😒

Second as some of y'all know our goal for the year is 365 orders
We are currently 100 orders behind schedule. I know we can't make up for that this month, and it'll take a couple busy months to get back on track, but let's make this month hectic busy!!
You can message me to inquire at anytime, you can shop our Etsy linked in my bio, or you can even access our treats on my website linked in bio.
Please share any of our goodies posts too as this hugely helps get the word out.

Y'all have showed up for me so much this year, and I know you'll continue to do so. Thank you so much! πŸ€—

✨ your purchase is a vote for the kind of breeding you want to continue. ✨

Yesterday, I saw something in a local Facebook group that has been sitting heavy on my mind ever since. There were rabbits being posted looking for homes. They were inexpensive, not what I would personally consider quality breeding stock, and from what I could see, they were being kept in conditions that I personally would not be comfortable supporting.

No, don't take this as me sitting on some breeder high horse, I started with cheap, mixed breed rabbits too.
I didn't start with pedigrees. I didn't start with beautifully structured animals from established lines. I didn't know half of what I know now. I bought what was available to me, learned as I went, made mistakes, changed things, and grew.

Sometimes knowledge comes before experience and sometimes experience is what gives you the knowledge. So this isn't about bashing someone else for being at a different place in their journey. It's about YOU, the buyer, understanding how much power your purchase actually has.

If you're looking for a pet rabbit,or even if you are looking for your newest addition to your own breeding program please, please research the person you're considering purchasing from. Don't just research rabbits. Research the breeder. Why? Because every time you purchase an animal, you're financially supporting the program that produced it. Sales buy feed.
Sales buy supplies. Sales build cages and barns. Sales purchase future breeding stock. Sales make the next litter possible. Your money doesn't just purchase the rabbit sitting in front of you. It helps fund whatever comes next and that... THAT is why it matters who you support.

If something about a breeder's practices makes you uncomfortable, don't convince yourself that you're "saving" one by purchasing it. Because while your heart may be in the right place, that money can make it possible to produce another litter under those exact same circumstances. At the same time, I think we need to be careful throwing around words like "backyard breeder" and "ethical breeder" as if they have one universally agreed upon definition. They don't.

My definition of an ethical breeder may not perfectly match yours. Something I consider completely acceptable in animal husbandry may be a deal breaker for someone else, and something another breeder does may be a deal breaker for me. That's why I don't think education should simply be "Only buy from ethical breeders." I think it should be, figure out what ethical breeding means to YOU and then learn enough to recognize it. Ask questions. What are they breeding for besides producing babies? How do they select their breeding animals? What happens to animals that don't meet their breeding goals? What kind of housing and daily care are provided? How often are their animals bred? What health issues exist in their lines?
Do they keep records? Can they explain why they made a particular pairing? What happens if you have questions after bringing your rabbit home? Perhaps maybe one of the biggest ones, are they willing to educate you, or do they just want your money?

Also remember that price alone tells you almost nothing. An expensive rabbit isn't automatically well bred.
A cheap rabbit isn't automatically poorly bred. A pedigree doesn't magically make someone responsible. A fancy rabbitry doesn't automatically make someone ethical.
And a small backyard setup doesn't automatically make someone unethical.

Look deeper. Look at the animals.
Look at the husbandry. Look at the breeder's knowledge. Look at their goals. Look at their transparency.
Look at the consistency between what they preach publicly and what they actually practice, then decide whether those are practices you want your money helping to continue.
Because ultimately, we can talk about responsible breeding until we're blue in the face, but breeders of all sorts will continue producing animals so remember you help decide if the bad ones stick around. Buyers shape the animal world too. Every purchase is support. Every dollar is a vote. And when you're bringing home a living, breathing animal that may be part of your family for the next decade, I think it's worth taking the extra time to make sure you're casting that vote somewhere you actually believe in.

Research the rabbit. Research the breed. But please research the breeder too.
