Someone dropped this mama dog and her 9 puppies off at our back door sometime in the middle of the night. The puppies are maybe 2-3 weeks old. While I understand that some may think they are doing what is best, I would like to inform everyone on why a veterinary hospital is not the best place for a litter of newborn puppies.
Dropping off a mother dog and her newborn puppies at a veterinary hospital without prior arrangements can place the animals at serious risk. Newborn puppies have undeveloped immune systems and are extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases commonly present in veterinary environments. Stress from transport and separation from a quiet, familiar setting can also negatively affect the mother, potentially leading to decreased milk production, anxiety, or rejection of the puppies. Additionally, veterinary hospitals are designed primarily for medical treatment and emergencies, not long-term neonatal care.
We are actively looking for a rescue for both the momma and puppies who will be better equipped to care for them.
If you have any information regarding these babies, please feel free to reach out.
