We’re so glad that adorable Piper is feeling well again! Thank you to Piper’s family for the kind words and for trusting our team during such a scary time. We’re honored to care for pets, and the people who love them, when they need it most.

"I cannot express enough gratitude to Dr. Plumley and the entire staff at Littleton Area Veterinarian Urgent Care for the compassionate care they provided during one of the most frightening moments of my life. When my dog, Piper, became very ill, I rushed to the emergency room in a state of emotional distress. I was completely overwhelmed and having a hard time processing the scary medical information.

Despite the chaos of the ER, Dr. Plumley took the time to sit with me. They patiently and calmly explained Piper's condition in terms I could understand, without ever making me feel rushed or foolish. This simple act of humanity made all the difference. It allowed me to be a clear-headed advocate for my pet and feel more in control of a terrifying situation.
The entire team was not only skilled but also incredibly kind and respectful. They treated both me and my dog with a level of care that went far beyond medical treatment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your professionalism and, most importantly, your empathy when I needed it most."

Last week we met Zeik the French Bulldog and his wonderful, dedicated family. Zeik was the perfect gentleman during his visit, despite being in tremendous distress from a painful abscess deep his muscle. Zeik charmed everyone with his full body wags and smiles, even as he underwent emergency surgery. He is now recovering beautifully and back to his wonderful life, surrounded by the love of his amazing family. We’re so glad we could be part of his care! Zeik's family shared this message (and these adorable pictures) below

"After what we thought was another allergic reaction for our French Bulldog late on a Sunday, we found ourselves a few hours from home searching for an emergency vet. We decided on Littleton Area Veterinary Urgent Care, and thankfully we did. Upon arrival, we learned it wasn’t an allergy at all— our dog, Zeik, had developed a severe abscess that required immediate surgery. Dr. Cappello and Kelli acted quickly, performing emergency surgery while keeping us informed every step of the way, even preparing us for the possibility that he might need to stay overnight at an animal hospital after doing what they could on site. Thankfully, the procedure went smoothly, and the following day we returned for a follow-up with Dr. Plumley and Kelli. To our relief, Zeik was on the road to recovery and awaiting his next check-in to have the drain tube removed.

What really stood out to us was the compassion and care the entire staff showed throughout the process. They not only treated Zeik with urgency and skill, but they also made sure we felt supported. After the procedure, they literally got down on the floor with us to walk through Zeik’s aftercare step by step, showing us exactly what to do to give him the best chance at a smooth recovery even checking in over text. Their kindness and thoroughness made an incredibly stressful situation so much more manageable, and we are deeply grateful for the level of care provided"

Octane came to see us last week for a mysterious swelling on her nose. She’s a racing sled dog, currently training hard for the Dryland World Championships next month, and her mom didn’t want to risk anything that could interfere with her ability to train and race.

The swelling began after an encounter with a porcupine months ago and never fully resolved. During surgery, we uncovered the surprising culprit. Deep inside the swelling was a single porcupine quill!

Octane is now well on her way to recovery and already back to training. We’re so glad to be part of her journey and wish her the best of luck at the Championships!

Porcupine Quills and Dogs

Porcupine encounters are fairly common for curious dogs, and quills can cause more trouble than you might expect.

How quills work: Porcupine quills are sharp, barbed hairs that easily pe*****te skin and are very difficult to remove. The barbs make them move deeper into tissue over time rather than working their way out.

Risks: Quills can migrate through the body, sometimes traveling surprisingly far from where they first entered. This can lead to swelling, abscesses, infection, and even damage to organs if left untreated.

Symptoms to watch for: Swelling, pain, draining tracts (small holes that ooze), or unexplained lumps weeks after a porcupine encounter.

Treatment: Prompt veterinary care is best. Quills should never be pulled at home, since they can break and leave fragments behind. In some cases, like Octane’s, a quill can stay hidden for months and only be found with surgery.

We had the joy of meeting Asher the Adventure Dog and his wonderful mom this weekend. What a sweet boy- just look at that happy handsome face! Even though he wasn’t feeling his best, Asher was the perfect gentleman, sharing snuggles and tail wags despite his pain, and charming everyone he met. We’re so glad to be part of Asher’s recovery journey and help him get back to the adventures he loves most.

His mom also shared these words below about her special boy.

Asher the Adventure Dog is ALWAYS up for anything! From a morning run, a hike in the mountains, snowshoeing to floating in a raft on the pond.

He was a foster fail and I'm so glad our paths crossed, I can't imagine my life without him in it.

This was the first time I've ever had to use an Emergency Veterinarian's service.

I'm so glad I chose Littleton Area Veterinarian Urgent Care. They were amazing from the time they answered the phone, to the care itself and the follow up afterwards. The staff is friendly and patient.

Asher will soon be ready to take on many more adventures and I am incredibly thankful.

Mustang (along with Voss, their dad Kerosene, and Breccan) are all Eurohounds! This athletic sled dog is a cross of Alaskan Huskies, Pointers, and Greyhounds. Mustang’s mix is Hungarian Greyhound, German Shorthair Pointer and Alaskan Husky, with a bit of English Pointer and Greyhound.

Eurohounds are bred for sled dog racing and skijoring. They are true athletes and known for their speed, stamina, and love of running! While not a registered breed, they’re incredibly popular in competitive mushing across Europe and North America.

We are having a lot of fun reading all your guesses for Mustang’s breed. The closest guess so far is “something big with long legs and a long tail”. Here is a hint- Mustang is 62lbs and 5 months old, and Vossen’s littermate! Here’s a picture of Voss and their Dad. We will post the answer tomorrow
