Donkey Dreams Sanctuary

Donkey Dreams Sanctuary We provide wild and rescue donkeys a forever home in a donkey family enjoying peace and love for the rest of their lives.

We are GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries) Certified. Donkey Dreams was birthed in our hearts when we realized some donkeys desire to roam open spaces with their families, have a special place to call their forever home and to interact with humans at their leisure. While we primarily exist to give donkeys who have been displaced from their original homes their best life, we also exist t

o make the world a better place, one donkey and human interaction at a time. We believe donkeys have an amazing ability to make you feel loved, accepted and worthy. Itโ€™s been our observation that when people interact with donkeys they have an increased sense of well-being, kindness and compassion. We are currently home to 25 residents, including 8 special needs donkeys, 7 donkeys over 20 years old, 4 donkeys under two years old, and 4 mom/juvenile pairs. If you would like to be invited to private donkey experiences hosted by Co-Founders, Amber and Edj, join our friends and family community at DonkeyDreams.org so you can receive personal email invitations from Amber and Edj. In the meantime, many of our adopted donkeys still need sponsors so please visit The Donkeys section of DonkeyDreams.org to see if there is a donkey you would like to sponsor.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Big News from Donkey Dreams Sanctuary

Donkey Dreams is moving.

We need your helpโ€”double your donation here; https://www.facebook.com/donate/2313532046121376/

We are relocating our donkey family from our 10-acre sanctuary in Scenic, Arizona to a new 40-acre property outside of Kingman, Arizona โ€” and while this move comes with its challenges, we could not be more excited about what it means for the donkeys you love.

A cattle ranching operation acquired the former rescue directly adjacent to our sanctuary and plans to drive cattle past our perimeter on horseback to the BLM land behind us. Even though the cattle drives are seasonal, many of our donkeys are deeply disturbed when people approach the perimeter on horseback. Donkeys are also highly attuned to the stress of nearby animals โ€” and if a donkey is startled during a cattle drive, they can move suddenly and unpredictably, making it unsafe for anyone in the enclosure with them. As a sanctuary, we promised these donkeys safety and peace. That promise does not have exceptions.

For our wild b***o advocates, there is another layer to this story. The BLM removed most, if not all, of the wild b***os from the public land behind our sanctuary โ€” land those b***os had called home for generations โ€” and is now leasing it to cattle ranchers. The same forces that displace wild b***os from their land are displacing us from ours. We, a sanctuary built to give wild b***os a home after being forced out for cattle grazing rights, are being forced out for cattle grazing rights. In that moment, we felt โ€” in a very real and human way โ€” a fraction of what our beloved residents had already lived through.

So we are doing what we always do at Donkey Dreams: converting adversity into opportunity.

The Kingman sanctuary is four times the size of our current property, on land that is the natural habitat of wild b***os. More space to roam. More room to graze. More of the wild b***o life they were always meant to live. For our 98 donkeys, this move is a gift.

This is the most significant undertaking in Donkey Dreams' history. Moving 98 donkeys safely and preparing a new sanctuary home comes with real costs โ€” fencing 40 acres, installing a well, water storage equipment, ranch equipment storage, transport costs, and more. We are asking our Facebook community to help us raise $5,000 toward the Kingman Relocation Project โ€” and right now, every dollar you give will be doubled through our $40,000 matching campaign. That means our Facebook community alone has the power to deliver $10,000 for the donkeys. No matter the size of your gift, it lands twice as hard.

We cannot wait for you to see these donkeys rediscover their wild b***o roots, roaming free on the land that was always meant to be theirs. Thank you for being in their corner.

One year ago today โ€” May 29th โ€” we hopped in the car and drove to Beatty, Nevada to pick up a little donkey missing part of his leg.

We had lost our beloved baby Kekoa just nine days before. We were deeply grieving. And then we got word that Gabriel was on his last legs โ€” literally. Something inside both of us said: go. We hooked up the trailer and were on the road within the hour.

Psychologically, it was probably the worst thing we could have done for our mental health. Gabrielโ€™s survival rate was so low. He was severely malnourished, his leg severed at the fetlock and at risk of infection. He had been surviving alone in the wild at just three to four months old for at least a month. The PTSD he carried was immense.

But something inside both of us said yes. And we listened.

What followed was 360+ days of daily bandage and sock changes, watching him slowly heal, gain weight, and find his footing โ€” literally โ€” on his Magic Leg. We watched a donkey who had survived unimaginable odds learn to trust, to play, to belong. He longed for a herd from his very first day, pressing against fence lines, calling out to other donkeys. He now runs with the Brave Herd, with Asher beside him and Halo as his best friend, full of confidence and mischief and joy.

Looking at him today, it is hard to believe he is the same donkey. We have all been so inspired by him โ€” his endurance, his resilience, his spirit.

Thank you, Gabriel, for surviving the wild in the condition you were in so you could find your way to us. You have brought us more joy and inspiration โ€” sprinkled with shenanigans โ€” than we ever could have imagined. ๐Ÿ’›

And thank you, Kekoa. In your leaving, you made room for him to arrive. ๐Ÿซ

Happy one year, Gabriel. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿซ

A sleepy Sunday for Gabriel ๐Ÿ˜

After all of his PTSD of being left by his herd in the wild and surviving by himself for at least a month, we are so happy that he feels so safe and comfortable here.
