The Little Rock Zoo’s eldest elephant, Zina, has been diagnosed with Tuberculosis after a routine test found she was shedding the bacteria. The Little Rock Zoo is providing care for Zina, and she is doing well. Zina’s care and treatment are of the utmost importance and Zoo staff will continue to monitor her health.

Tuberculosis is considered a zoonotic disease; however, it is primarily a human disease that can be spread to animals. It is common to see tuberculosis in Asian elephants especially older ones imported from Southeast Asia prior to the 1970s. As a part of routine and preventative care of elephants, trunk wash testing is performed on elephants to monitor for possible tuberculosis. This is how Zina was initially diagnosed.

Zina does not currently show symptoms of tuberculosis and is in good health. She is undergoing treatment to stop shedding the bacteria to prevent it from spreading to another person or animal. Treatment for tuberculosis can be hard on an animal or person’s system; therefore, Zoo staff will monitor her closely with frequent check-ups and blood work to make sure she is tolerating treatment.

As a part of the Little Rock Zoo’s zoonotic disease protocol, the staff are routinely tested for tuberculosis. Testing is done to protect both animals and employees. For this reason, you may notice staff wearing masks while working with the elephants. Guests are also not at a risk of contracting the disease. The distance between guests and elephants ensures safety.
